On the night of December 20, 1987, a Philippine passenger ferry, MV Doña Paz, collided with an oil tanker, MT Vector. Both vessels ignited swiftly, trapping passengers and crews in a devastating fire.

Among 4,385 people, only 26 survived the disaster. The survivors were forced to jump off the ship and swim among charred bodies in flaming waters around the ship, with some using suitcases as makeshift flotation devices.

It reportedly took eight hours before Philippine maritime authorities learned of the accident, and another eight hours to initiate search-and-rescue operations.

The tragedy stands as the deadliest peacetime maritime disaster in history.
