I never really understood how FUTURES trading worked.

How do you even make money just by predicting that price will fall?

With spot trading I understood it fine. when you buy and hold a coin, your money grows as the price of the coin grows.

Then it finally clicked for me.

Futures is a bet between traders not a buy and sell.

You don't buy the coin. You put margin(money) down and take a side.

If I go long at a price, I need a trader(s) to short at that price with enough margin(money) to match me.

If i say it goes up.
And they say it goes down.

We both enter the trade when BTC is at $100.

I go long. Someone else goes short.

It hits $110, they pay me the $10 difference.
It hits $90, I pay them the $10.

You don't sell a coin you own. You just take the side that price falls, and if it does, you take the difference.

Whoever is right takes it from whoever is wrong.

The exchange just moves it. No new money shows up. The coin never leaves anyone's wallet.

When you close, your balance changes by that difference.
