@bjerke_paige I definitely think these types of relationships form between businesses and media but the corruption seems inevitable. Though it’s often harmless to consumers, I do think we should be looking for whether some of this corruption may have negative effects on consumers #UWJ201 #318
@JordynKonefsky I think it really depends on the ads production. Especially with social media sites like Instagram where theyve started to make ads look so much like your feed that it begins to blend. Half the time I don’t realize it’s an ad until I’ve already liked or viewed it #UWJ201 #318
@AnnaJonckheer I don’t think when these companies formed 15+ years ago expected to have the reach they do now. Many of them started as pipe dreams and most likely didn’t even think their app/site would stick around a year let alone have such an impact on society for a decade #UWJ201 #318
@IsabellaGaydos I believe that we need to hold companies accountable because you can set up filters to get rid of these results. Now the filter may not work 100% of the time but the lack of effort is causing more harm than users. You can control an algorithm more than people #UWJ201 #318
@jayda_zhu I think consequences could impact how many people chose to spread disinformation. But the problem is proving they knew it was false to begin with in order to hold them accountable. So while I think we should I just don't know if there is a feasible way to do it. #UWJ201 #318
@kaseysteinn I think now it is so much easier to find out if a news source is reporting false information as compared to 10+ years ago. So we now hear more about all the false stories reported and have naturally become hesitant to trust news sources #UWJ201 #318
@Austin_Keller10 It depends on what they are limiting. If its a matter of safety like not reporting locations of troops, then I think that regulation is valid. But when it comes to things the public has the right to know about/doesn’t put people in danger, I think it’s a violation #UWJ201 #318
@luke_hakimian Yes I do think so, most social media sites have you agree to a set of rules/regulations to follow on the app. These rules allow for everyone to have an appropriate space to speak. If you end up deplatformed, you violated the rules you agreed to in the first place #UWJ201 #318
@olibraat With social media now giving people a platform to speak/get news quickly, it has had a huge impact on news deserts. Newer generations aren’t going to buy newspapers when it’s free on Twitter. Forcing the closure of small presses and the growth of more news deserts #UWJ201 #318
@Omoffitt2 I think this impacts the news we consume because we only ever hear/see things from their lens. These reporters are not sympathetic to stories of minorities since they have no connection. This leads to them sometimes misreporting information and negative framing #UWJ201 #318
@NiemiecJennaUW@prowag I’ve also been going through this new stage of reconsidering what I do because I’m unsure whether I want to do it or I’m trying to fit in. I’m even questioning my outfit choices now. Wasn’t expecting to enter a life crisis after that lecture but here we are… #UWJ201 #318
In Kilgo's article, she discusses how activists feel they have no other way to attract new sources' without drawing negative attention. Why do you think this is the only way they will listen and would they ever seek out activists when protests weren't happening? #UWJ201 #318
@chanceizard I think media has always been putting out flashy headlines for sales. Even though this has always been present, with how wide spread media has become (companies practically fighting for you to click their story) has made news companies rely on this tactic more #UWJ201 #318
With media influencing filter bubbles do you think some people have a stance on things just because others in their bubble suggest they should? Is constantly seeing what we want to see influencing our opinions on smaller matters differently than if we didn’t? #UWJ201 #318
@grob_jordan@GeorgiaMorrowww I agree that a neutral source would be the best way to try and have a platform that is unbiased. But with that you run into the problem how do you keep that source unbiased/trustworthy? And how do we know people won’t still view it as untrustworthy in the end? #UWJ201 #318
@annamcgeough2 I think trying to eliminate filter bubbles is near impossible. I don’t see the entire population abandoning our own filter bubbles when they actively reinforce our thoughts/opinions. Especially when things like social media only further push us to stay in our bubbles #UWJ201 #318
