@mollyjgoldberg I think the increase in the types of news outlets available for the average reader has blurred the lines between informing and persuading but not completely b/c non-biased sources still exist only to inform #UWJ201 #313
@shaykaplann The first example that comes to mind for me is the clothing companies Yeezy or Supreme which sell clothing in ‘drops’ of limited availability so the consumer perceives the product as rare #313 #UWJ201
In lecture today we talked about the peripheral route of persuasion which changes attitudes by going around the rational mind and requires less deep thought. Are there any ad’s you’ve seen recently that depict this? #313 #UWJ201
@allisoncourt24@BrianneCapper I totally agree with you! As a society, we need to learn how to hear other peoples perspectives and understand where their thinking originates from. This will allow for less polarization and immediate dismissal of those we disagree with #UWJ201 #313
@DonlinNina I think that they can be lesser biased if they actively separate the politics of making money from the content they produce but I’m not sure how likely this is to happen. #UWJ201 #313
#UWJ201 #313 in lecture today we discussed social media being used for social mobilization. Where have you seen this happen on a platform you use frequently?
@Jacob_Zeddie Ultimately, selling itself out is probably the highest profit option for many small companies and sometimes they have no choice because they simply cannot compete. If would be nice if this wasn’t the case #UWJ201 #313
@keconnelly18 I don’t think this has a positive effect on the public because it limits the amount of opinions shared. A good example of this is Sinclair Media like we discussed in class #UWJ201 #313
It’s so interesting that Disney owns so many more media outlets than most assume including ESPN, Lucasfilms, ABC, HULU and Vice Media. Did any of these or others surprise you? #UWJ201 #313
@beccaspitalnik Yes I agree and I think that the government needs to keep social media companies accountable for the de-platforming that they have avoided to do. #UWJ201 #313
@bjerke_paige Although social media companies are private entities, the platforms they hold have real effects in society therefore banning Trump on Twitter for inciting violence is valid in my opinion. #UWJ201 #313
In class today we discussed what consistutes as libel. Do you feel like defamation through social media should be treated the same legally as a published article? #UWJ201 #313
In the reading this week, we discovered that the majority of journalists are white, educated people who identify as democrats or independent. How does this effect the news we digest each day? #313 #UWJ201
@MadisonTargum I think the problem lies in the fact that media companies are private entities, free to make any and all decisions they went. Unfortunately, many of these decisions are profit driven too #313 #UWJ201
@katerouman While I don’t think combatting polarization is more important than accuracy, it’s definitely something we need to consider. More news that’s framed from an unbiased perspective is so important! #313 #UWJ201
How do you feel that geographic location within the US effects political viewpoints and how do the types of news people consume in particular areas contribute? #313 #UWJ201
@ColbyBellaman I completely agree. I think women are more conscientious about how we are perceived by others and therefore hesitant to be confident when discussing unfamiliar subjects. #UWJ201 #313
@beccaspitalnik I think people with less access to different types of news have unintentional bias. But people with more access to resources also have bias because they may stick to more partisan news sources #UWJ201 #313
@sofia_luchetti I think one way we can do this is to separate our political identity from ourselves as we read news media. Instead of reading as a Democrat or Republican, look for the facts and validity of the argument or information present. This way, we can exclude opinion bias #313 #UWJ201
@Sclark978 I think underlying misogyny in society has created the notion that are women second to men. This is why women are less confident when making statements we are not completely sure of and are more self aware when it comes to how we are being perceived by others #313 #UWJ201
