Things I'm sick of hearing from my employees:
- Can I leave early today
- I'll be late in the morning
- My child is sick, can I rush off
- I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow, is that okay
- I'm going to be late back from lunch, I've got some things to sort
I don't care.
My late grandfather sent me this letter in 1995 when I was 4 years old.
He had just recovered from a triple bypass surgery.
I was about to start my first year of school, and he had been told I was nervous about it.
The letter has two pearls of wisdom that I'll cherish forever:
"But the first lesson I learnt is that every journey—however big—consists of small steps.”
Lesson: Everything big and intimidating can be deconstructed into a string of small, manageable actions. Every great wall is built one brick at a time.
“What you are scared of for the future becomes something of the past.”
Lesson: The scary future quickly becomes the forgotten past. Always ask "so what?" about your great fears for the future. Never let fears for the future taint your enjoyment of the present.
