The space is shrinking in Georgia for civil society. Authorities have frozen the accounts of 7 NGOs and opened a criminal case for “sabotage,” alleging they funded protective gear for protesters. Unlike previous cases, this could lead to the arrest of the NGO's leaders 1/3
Over the past several months, Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Georgian Dream (GD) has dramatically adjusted its rhetoric toward @realDonaldTrump
At first, GD presented Trump as a possible ally in the fight against the so-called “deep state.” They suggested that if he managed to defeat it, relations between Georgia and the U.S. could improve. GD used Trump’s image to portray their own conflicts with the West as part of a bigger global battle against hidden powers.
However, when it became clear that Trump and U.S. policies continued to challenge GD’s pro-Kremlin direction and democratic backsliding, the tone drastically changed. GD leaders began expressing doubts about Trump’s ability to defeat the ‘deep state’ and in some cases even implied that he had fallen under Deep State’s control.
This narrative served a strategic purpose - if relations with Trump’s administration failed to improve, it could be blamed not on GD’s own actions, but on #Trump being controlled by “Deep State”. In doing so, GD attempted to reframe its growing international isolation not as a consequence of its authoritarian drift, but as collateral damage in a global conspiracy it claims to resist.

Today, Ivanishvili’s court is hearing the cases of Ana Kavtaradze (@ahaliparty ) and Tornike Skhvitaridze, brother of prisoner of conscience Saba Skhvitaridze. Both are accused of “insulting” a police officer.
The regime tried to block supporters from the hearing by filling the courtroom with MIA agents - but they were eventually forced to leave.

We stand with the Georgian people against the illegitimate Ivanishvili regime. The regime must release all political prisoners. Free and fair elections are the only way forward!
Throughout the day, there has been a coordinated attack by Ivanishvili’s party, his loyal experts, and media against U.S. President @realDonaldTrump , claiming that even Trump is controlled by ‘Deep State’.

For contrast:

Second photo: Ivanishvili’s PM Irakli Kobakhidze standing next to Hamas’ leader at the inauguration of Iran’s new president, where chants of “Death to America” were heard.

A new form of terror by Georgian Dream party — fines of 5000 GEL (around 1800$) for participating in protests are being delivered not directly to activists but to their elderly parents by 4-5 police officers, mostly at night, as a form of psychological intimidation.

I admire the courage of Mzia Amaglobeli in the face of the brutal Ivanishvili regime. The Georgian people will not be intimidated. Soon, @realDonaldTrump will be President and new sanctions will be coming. Ivanishvili’s corrupt enablers are running out of time
Student #protests are now underway at these #Georgian universities:
🇬🇪 ‘s students are demanding freedom for political prisoners and new election!

“Another act of disobedience by activist Mariam Sichinava: arrested in Zugdidi for throwing fireworks during a protest. She has been fined 6 times for violating laws passed by Ivanishvili’s illegitimate Parliament. #Zugdidi#Georgia#Protests” #protestgeorgia
All of those involved in the brutal crackdown on Georgian protesters be on notice: Congress is watching and this will inform future efforts in imposing sanctions.
How do #Georgians#protest?

I am grateful to lead this statement of the International Friends of Georgia. We call on all free governments to refrain from senior meetings with the Ivanishvili regime until it agrees to hold free and fair elections. We also call for unified sanctions against the regime.
