It all started when Cancelo decided to return to Barça after seeing the terrifying attacking level Flick had taken the team to.
Cancelo has always loved Barcelona, but his first spell under Xavi was poor because Xavi was more defensive minded, unlike Flick.
The moment he saw Flick’s style, he knew it was time to return. He was convinced he could do something special, so he kept pushing for an exit from Al Hilal until he secured a loan and delivered half a season for the history books.
When the loan ended, he returned to Al Hilal and kept pushing until they finally let him join his dream club for free.
And look at him now. Cancelo is playing at a terrifying level for both Barça and Portugal. This is the most complete version of João Cancelo we’ve ever seen.
Cancelo wanted to restart play immediately after his goal, then remembered he still had Galatasaray fans to provoke.
No one bleeds blaugrana more than him. 😂
🚨🎙️ Okan Buruk Galatasaray head coach on Barcelona’s victory and Lamine Yamal:
“Honestly, we prepared extremely well for Barcelona. We knew exactly what we wanted to do, and our fans were incredible tonight. The atmosphere was unbelievable, and in the first half, I genuinely thought we had done a great job.
Before the game, I thought Lemina had done something brilliant with his comments about Lamine Yamal. He had challenged him, questioned him, and I thought maybe that would get into his head. And honestly, it worked in the first half.
But I don’t know where that boy found his energy after the break. At one point, I actually looked at Lemina and thought, ‘Why did you give this boy extra motivation before the game?’ (laugh)
Because Lamine came out in the second half like a completely different player. He was electric. Every time he got the ball, something dangerous happened. He created chances, opened spaces, and changed the entire game. He didn’t even score, but look at how many problems he caused us.
People will look at the result and say Galatasaray lost to Barcelona. But if you ask me, we lost this game to Lamine Yamal. That is how much influence he had on the match.
I’m not happy saying this after losing, of course, but sometimes you have to put your pride aside and appreciate greatness. At 18, if you can influence a game at this level against a team like ours, then you are already a special player.
And if you ask me about the Ballon d’Or, I have no doubt that he deserves to be in that conversation. A player like this comes around very rarely. Tonight, we experienced that quality firsthand.”
🚨 Neymar on Lamine Yamal’s outrageous assist against Galatasaray:
“I watched that move three times. Not because I didn’t understand it. Because I wanted to know at what point he decided he was going to do it.
There is a difference between a player who knows tricks and a player who knows when to use them. A lot of young wingers can move their feet very quickly. You see it in training every day. But put them in a Champions League match, away from home, with a defender waiting for them near the corner of the box, and suddenly they remember the simple pass.
Lamine doesn’t.
Look at the defender. He’s watching the ball, trying not to commit. Lamine gives him one movement, then another. He changes the angle with his foot, almost loses the space, and somehow still finds the pass for Anthony Gordon.
That’s the part I liked. He doesn’t do the skill and then stand there admiring it. He knows where Gordon is.
Someone sent me the clip and said, ‘This reminds me of you.’
I told him, ‘No, don’t do that to the boy.’
He asked why.
‘Because now every time he touches the ball, people will be waiting for him to become somebody else.’
I know what that feels like. At nineteen, people want you to entertain them, score goals, win trophies, and somehow never make a mistake. They forget you’re still learning what kind of player you want to be.
But I’ll admit something. That little movement before the assist? I smiled. I know that feeling when you’re facing a defender and you realise he’s waiting for you to make the first decision.
The beautiful thing is making him believe he’s made the right decision.
Then you change it.
People will say, ‘Why take that risk? Why not cross immediately?’
Because if every player chose the safest option, nobody would remember half the football we grew up loving.
And what makes Lamine special is that it isn’t just entertainment. He had two assists against Galatasaray. He was creating chances all night. There is a result at the end of the skill.
I was asked if I would have tried that move myself.
Of course.
‘Would it have worked?’
I said, ‘Depends who was defending.’
But the funny thing is, Lamine is 19. He doesn’t seem particularly interested in asking that question. He sees the defender, sees the ball, and decides to find out.
I hope nobody coaches that courage out of him.”
🔵🔴 Hansi Flick: “We are hungry. I share it with the team. Many of our players won the World Cup, and we wanted to see if they still had that hunger”.
“And yes, they do”.
🔵🔴⭐️ Hansi Flick: “Lamine Yamal will be the best player in the world, if he is not already”.
“You can see, feel that in every training session. His attitude, his mentality, his willingness to improve every day, that is the right mentality”.
🇦🇷 Lionel Scaloni: “We will now build with new talents, new young players, we will look at new ways… but I have never seen such aura like Lionel Messi has”.
“We will start a new chapter, but what Leo trasmits, that’s impossible to replace”.
🚨🇦🇷 LIONEL MESSI: “LAMINE YAMAL REMINDS ME OF MYSELF — BUT HE HAS SOMETHING I DIDN’T.”
🗣️ Lionel Messi:
“When I watch Lamine, I see things that remind me of when I was young.
The way he receives the ball, changes direction and plays without fear is special.
But there is something about him that I didn't have at that age.
He is already very comfortable playing in front of millions of people.
At 18 I was still learning how to deal with the pressure.
Lamine seems to enjoy it.
He doesn't look afraid to make mistakes. He asks for the ball again and again.
That is very important for a young player.
I don't know how far he will go, because football is unpredictable.
But if he keeps enjoying the game and continues working, he can become one of the best players of his generation.”
🚨🇧🇷 Casemiro on Lionel Messi’s farewell game for Argentina:
“Anytime I remember that Messi is playing his last game for Argentina, I honestly feel emotional. It’s difficult to accept that we’re getting closer to that moment.
But the real fear for me isn’t Messi saying goodbye to the national team. It’s knowing that one day, I might wake up and hear Lionel Messi is saying goodbye to football completely.
I hope that day never comes because, honestly, I’m not ready to let him go yet. Playing alongside Messi is one of the best memories I’ll carry with me forever.
One day, I’ll sit with my children and tell them,
‘I played with the greatest of all time.’
That’s something I’ll always be proud of. Some players leave memories. Messi leaves a legacy.”
🚨🎙️ Gary Medal: The day I made Messi get his first ever red card for his country, my kids and wife didn’t speak for me for days after I got home. I realized my mistake then I shyly asked him for his shirt the next time I saw him.
He accepted without hesitation.
✨🇦🇷🇫🇷 Ousmane Dembélé: “I spent some years at Barça and I saw some exceptional top players… one was PERFECT, Messi”.
“I wanted to become a complete players too: goals, assists, help the team, passes…”.
“I am the player I wanted to become”.
🚨 Gavi on Joao Felix hinting at a return to Barcelona:
🗣️ “When he left, I was a bit emotional because I really wanted him to stay, but these are things that happen in football.
I was very close to him when he was here. We spent a lot of time together in the dressing room, and he was always someone who worked hard.
He has qualities that you always want in a teammate. His technical ability is probably his biggest strength, and that’s something we really value here.
If he comes back, I know we can do a lot of damage in Europe. We’ve seen what he can do. He helped his club win their first league title in a long time, and now he’s playing really well for his country too.
I actually told him that I really wanted him back. So maybe he listened to me and thought about it.”
