Baba Banda Singh Bahadur (1670-1716) was a prominent Sikh warrior and military leader who played a crucial role in the early 18th-century Sikh struggle against the Mughal Empire. He is revered for his military prowess, particularly his victories against the Mughals, and for establishing the first Sikh state. 

Here's a more detailed look at his history:

Early Life and Conversion to Sikhism:

Born as Lachman Das in Rajouri (present-day Jammu and Kashmir), he initially became a Hindu ascetic named Madho Das Bairagi. 

He established a monastery at Nanded. 

In 1708, he met with Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, who baptized him into the Khalsa, giving him the name Banda Singh Bahadur. 

Military Campaigns and Establishment of Sikh Rule:

Guru Gobind Singh instructed Banda Singh to lead the Khalsa in Punjab to combat the tyranny of the Mughal rulers and their officials, especially Wazir Khan, the Nawab of Sirhind. 

Banda Singh Bahadur initiated a series of military campaigns, achieving notable victories at Samana, Sadhaura, and Chappar Chiri, culminating in the sack of Sirhind in 1710. 
At Chappar Chiri, his forces decisively defeated the Mughal army, killing Wazir Khan. 
He established his capital at Lohgarh (formerly Mukhlisgarh) and introduced reforms, including the abolition of the Zamindari system and granting land ownership to tillers. 
He also struck coins and issued orders in the name of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. 
Later Challenges and Martyrdom:
Banda Singh Bahadur faced fierce resistance from the Mughal forces, including a protracted siege at Gurdas Nangal. 
He was eventually captured in 1715 along with his companions and taken to Delhi. 
Despite brutal torture, he refused to renounce his faith and was executed in Delhi in June 1716.

Military Leadership:
Banda Singh Bahadur is recognized as the first Sikh military leader to wage offensive warfare against the Mughals, significantly expanding Sikh territory and influence. 

Social Reform:
He abolished the Zamindari system, empowering the peasantry and challenging the existing feudal order. 
Symbol of Sikh Resistance:
His life and martyrdom became a symbol of Sikh defiance against oppression and injustice, inspiring future generations. 🙏
