What did coastal environments look like during the late Paleozoic ice age? A new study explores more than 75 km of Pennsylvanian outcrops in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico to reveal how carbonate and siliciclastic sediments mixed across a dynamic ancient shelf. The research team mapped changing facies, reconstructed platform orientation, and showed how uplift and basin subsidence shaped this evolving landscape. It’s a detailed look at how climate, tectonics, and sea-level change interacted in the deep past. Wrinkle structures in the rock record are usually formed by ancient photosynthetic microbial mats. This new #Geology article by Rowan Martindale and colleagues reports wrinkle structures in Lower Jurassic turbidites from Morocco and given their paleodepth (~200 m), they are interpreted to have been formed by chemosynthetic mat communities. The chemosynthetic mat-induced wrinkle paradigm has significant implications for what communities make wrinkles, where they might be preserved, and highlights new possibilities for studying ancient chemosynthetic ecosystems. Figure 1 from the paper (first image) includes a photo of the rippled beds that the wrinkle structures are found on. The wrinkles are smaller scale structures on top of the rippled sands. Figure 2 (second image) shows close ups of the wrinkle structures themselves.
