Two mining stories are trending in South Africa right now, and only one of them tells you the truth about this industry.

Story one: a chrome contractor from Rustenburg started with 38 workers in 2018. Seven years later he's running 2,500 people and moving 200,000 tonnes of ore a month for one of the majors.

Ordinary South Africans see the Volvo fleet, the growth numbers, and the tender questions swirling around him, and it feels massive. It feels like proof that anyone can break into mining and get rich fast.

Story two: while that story was trending, Gold Fields quietly banked around R95 billion in revenue for 2024. One company. One year. The industry those old houses sit inside made R865.8 billion in total mineral sales last year, up from R302 billion in 2010. It employs almost 470,000 people directly and feeds close to 1.9 million more through their wages.

That's the part nobody screenshots. The new player everyone's talking about is real, and the hustle is real. But next to mining houses that have compounded wealth for a century, it's still small change. Scale in mining isn't built in seven years. It's built in generations.

The loud story gets the attention. The quiet one gets the money.

Nationalisation is when a government takes over the ownership and control of a private business, industry, or asset, shifting it from the private to the public sector.

Whether one agrees with this act or not, this is the definition.

On the other hand, when the state opens its own mining company alongside private mining houses, as Julius Malema suggests here, it’s called...running a state-owned company.

This will come as shock to Mr Malema, but South Africa actually already does this in various industries, mining included. There’s nothing particularly special about it that needs explaining, but most importantly, it’s NOT nationalisation.

So, the only reason he would say this is because he knows his fanbase hangs onto every word he says, or more likely, they don’t really understand any of this stuff and this will make sense to them.

Still, it’s also possible that Malema himself doesn’t necessarily understand what nationalisation is; because as Hanlon’s Razor teaches us, we shouldn’t always attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

After witnessing the appaling, disrespectful conduct that Justice Madlanga was subjected to yesterday by Advocate Rafik Bhana, lead counsel to Witness Suleiman Carrim, I remembered this tribute from Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane SC to him, at the occasion of his farewell at the Constitutional Court on 31 July 2025.
