And that's how one of the most crucial engagements in independent Indian history ended. This is the story.
On the morning of 1st September, 61 years ago, an entire Pakistani division, supported by two regiments of armour, 70 Patton and Sherman tanks, crashed into the 191 Infantry Brigade and just 11 light AMX-13 tanks of the 20 Lancers led by Major Bhaskar Roy in the Chamb Jaurian sector.
Operation Grand Slam was designed to sweep Indian defences aside and take the strategic town of Akhnoor, putting all of Kashmir under threat.
Major Bhaskar Roy and his 11 light tanks put up a desperate defence against the two armoured regiments, using the AMX 13's speed to attack and quickly change positions destroying over thirty tanks and RCLs over a couple of desperate days of fighting, but losing 8 of his 11 tanks before help finally arrived.
By then Major Roy had four tanks shot under him, and while getting off the fourth, even lost his trousers that had caught fire.
He borrowed another pair and was still around when another AMX13 troop led by Major Shankar Roychowdhury(later to become the Chief of Army Staff) finally came to their rescue.
Shankar thought his friend was dead, when he heard a plaintive voice next to a destroyed tank demanding cigarettes and a ride back,
Major Roy lost his life in a tragic accident in 1969, but thanks to his troop's gallant defence, Akhnoor was saved, and the 20 Lancers are still known as the 'Saviors of Akhnoor.'
