This is not some extreme stunt or a special rescue exercise.
For residents of Kota and Umrisaen in Yamkeshwar, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand crossing the swollen Hinval River like this has become a part of everyday life.
Villagers have been demanding a bridge near the Hinval–Ganga confluence at Phoolchatti for decades. Without one, even reaching nearby areas can mean travelling around 50 km instead of crossing directly.
No training. No safety gear. Just another day in the hills, where people have learnt to risk their lives because the system never built a bridge.
The centuries-old Hiljatra tradition came alive in Kumod, Pithoragarh, bringing the farming traditions, folklore and cultural memory of the Sor Valley to the streets.
From traditional mask dances to the arrival of Lakhia Baba, the festival turns the monsoon season into a celebration of the land, agriculture and community.
This is not just a festival. It is a living piece of Kumaon’s cultural heritage.
A labourer from Bihar was stuck in the middle of a flooded river in Kapkot, Bageshwar. No rescue team was nearby.
Gram Pradhan Birendra Kapkoti jumped in himself.
He got the man out. The labourer survived. Birendra hurt his leg doing it and kept going anyway.
This is the kind of person who does not wait for someone else to act. He saw a man about to die and jumped in.
Uttarakhand is full of people like this. They just never make enough noise about it.
Well done Birendra ji. Get well soon. 🙏

Shared by Mr. Anand Negi, this footage shows three leopards outside his home late at night.
Thankfully, no one was harmed.
But this is becoming the new normal across Uttarakhand’s hills. Imagine if a child had stepped outside, or someone had walked into the courtyard in the dark.
Human-wildlife conflict is no longer a warning. It is a reality unfolding outside people’s homes. Before the next sighting turns into the next tragedy, we need answers, not just alerts.
Another day. Another village. Another life lost.
This time from Harkot village, Munsiyari, Pithoragarh, where Dhan Singh Mehra died after four days of illness. Not only was there no road to the village, there were not even enough young men left to carry him in a doli. His family had to call people from outside before he could be taken to the road. By the time he reached the hospital, it was too late.
How many doors must an ordinary citizen knock on before the system finally listens?
This is the story of Chandan Mehra from Malkhadugar, Kapkot, Bageshwar. In 2024, his wife Narayani Devi was killed after a wild boar attacked her while she had gone to collect fodder. Officials visited, promises were made, and the family was assured that government assistance would follow.
Months turned into a year.
When no help arrived, Chandan travelled from office to office, meeting officials, public representatives and local authorities, only to discover that there was barely any record of the incident. He spent his own money making repeated trips to government offices, trying to get the file moving.
Now, after exhausting every possible avenue, he has turned to social media with the hope that someone in authority will finally hear him.
No grieving family should have to spend more time chasing files than mourning their loss. If help is promised, it should not depend on how viral a video becomes.

This is the level of knowledge at the Tribal Research Institute (TRI) of Uttarakhand about the Tibet-border tribes🤣.Don't they know that "Bhotiya" is a collective term for several distinct sub-tribes, not a single tribe? 😭 Even the information about the jewellery is inaccurate.

Video from Kapkot, Bageshwar district, Uttarakhand.
For nine years, children and villagers from Kalapair, Kapdi, Kismila and nearby villages have crossed the Ramganga River on a rusted rope pulley after the suspension bridge was washed away in 2018.
Two lives have already been lost. Many have injured their hands pulling themselves across the river.
Only after videos of their daily struggle began circulating on social media did an official response come, announcing a proposed ₹23.38 crore bridge, a DPR under preparation and a likely tender in September 2026.
This is exactly why these stories must be told.
Had no one spoken up, had no one recorded these children risking their lives every day, this reality could have continued in silence. Sometimes, a video does more than go viral. It forces a system to respond.
If you give Uttrakhand top sports facilities & infra, the results will be historic. Living in HIGH ALTITUDES gives Pahadis unmatched natural stamina, endurance & raw strength. Especially in weight class combat sports like boxing, wrestling & MMA, they wud literally rule the ring.
Indian Seafarer Missing at Sea: Suspected Man Overboard Near Odesa, No Trace Found Despite Hours of Search!
New Delhi/Odesa | Marine Tanks
Indian seafarer Deepak Duddi, a resident of Haryana serving as an Able Seaman (AB), went missing under mysterious circumstances near the coast of Odesa, Ukraine, on 2 July 2026. According to the vessel Master's preliminary report, he is suspected to have fallen overboard (Man Overboard – MOB). However, the actual cause of the incident has not yet been officially established.
According to the available documents, Deepak Duddi joined the vessel DENSA DENIZ (formerly TANKER BEE 11, IMO: 9356646) on 20 March 2026 through AQUANOVA SHIP MANAGEMENT PRIVATE LIMITED. The vessel is reported to be associated with DENSA Tanker Fleet.
As per the Master's report, Deepak Duddi was last seen at approximately 1700 LT on 2 July 2026 while working at the vessel's starboard pilot station. A short while later, when a fellow crew member returned to the work area, Deepak was no longer at his assigned position. The matter was immediately reported to the Bosun, following which an extensive search of the entire vessel was conducted. Despite thorough efforts, he could not be located anywhere on board.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Master immediately declared a Man Overboard (MOB) emergency, sounded the General Alarm, and executed a Williamson Turn to commence search operations. At the same time, a PAN-PAN urgency message was broadcast to nearby vessels, while Odessa Port Control, Odessa MRCC, and the concerned company were promptly informed of the incident.
According to the report, all crew members remained actively engaged in the search operation. The Ukrainian Search and Rescue (SAR) team joined the operation at 1850 LT. Despite a coordinated search conducted from approximately 1715 LT until 2100 LT, neither the vessel nor the rescue teams found any trace of Deepak Duddi.
Due to the onset of darkness and the resulting limitations on conducting a safe and effective search, the search and rescue operation was suspended. The vessel subsequently resumed her scheduled voyage and proceeded towards Istanbul. The company stated that any further developments would be communicated to the relevant parties as soon as they become available.
The incident has raised serious concern within the Indian maritime community. Meanwhile, on social media, Deepak Duddi's family members and several seafarers have called for a fair, transparent, and comprehensive investigation, demanding that all facts surrounding the incident be made public. At present, it remains unclear whether this was an accident, a workplace-related incident, or the result of any other circumstances. The truth can only be established through an official investigation by the competent authorities.
Marine Tanks is closely monitoring the case and will continue to provide its readers with verified updates and official findings as soon as they become available.

26-Year-Old Indian Seafarer Dies While Painting Inside Ballast Tank Near Estonia!
Marine Tanks
A tragic accident occurred onboard Chrystal Sky (IMO: 9334569) near Estonia, where 26-year-old Indian seafarer Naman Verma, serving as an Ordinary Seaman (OS), lost his life while carrying out painting work inside a ballast tank.
According to the information received, the vessel is managed by Executive Ship Management. At the time of the incident, two crew members were engaged in painting inside the ballast tank. After a short while, both began to feel unwell. One crew member, despite feeling uneasy, managed to evacuate the tank, while Naman Verma lost consciousness inside the enclosed space.
The Master immediately contacted Tallinn (Estonia) Port Control and requested urgent medical assistance. A helicopter carrying a doctor arrived at the vessel and treated both crew members. The crew member who regained consciousness was evacuated ashore for further medical examination. Unfortunately, Naman Verma could not be saved. His mortal remains are currently onboard the vessel.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over confined space safety and the safety procedures followed during such high-risk operations.
Several important questions now arise:
Was a Gas Test carried out before entry into the ballast tank?
Was the oxygen level inside the tank confirmed to be safe?
Was a valid Confined Space Entry Permit issued?
Was continuous ventilation provided throughout the operation?
Were a standby rescue team and an entry attendant present at the scene?
Did the crew comply with all required safety procedures and the Permit to Work system?
The answers to these questions will emerge only after the official investigation is completed. At present, the exact cause of the accident has not been confirmed.

MISSILE STRIKE IN THE STRAIT: QATARI LNG CARRIER HIT, GLOBAL SHIPPING ON EDGE
A major maritime security incident has sent shockwaves through the global shipping industry after a Qatari LNG carrier was reportedly struck by an Iranian missile while transiting near the Strait of Hormuz.
The vessel sustained significant damage, with a fire breaking out on board following the impact. All crew members were safely evacuated, but the attack marks one of the most serious direct strikes on a commercial LNG vessel in one of the world's busiest energy corridors.
The incident comes at a critical time, testing ongoing U.S.-Iran diplomatic efforts and reigniting fears over the security of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which nearly one-fifth of the world's oil and a substantial share of global LNG exports pass.
The attack has heightened concerns across the maritime and energy sectors, with markets closely monitoring the potential impact on global energy supplies, freight rates, insurance premiums, and regional stability.
Authorities are investigating the incident, while international maritime stakeholders are closely watching developments in the Gulf.
