"Being the 'best you can be' is really only possible when you are deeply connected to another. Splendid isolation is for planets, not people" -@Dr_SueJohnson
The best advice I got in my 20s: When you feel stuck, shrink the time horizon. Don't ask what the year needs. Ask what today needs. One finished task. One workout. One closed loop. One hard conversation. Momentum is a byproduct of movement. Remember that.
Progress is not:
-feeling good every day
-never being scared again
Progress is:
-returning to regulation faster
-recognizing the spiral while you’re in it
-not collapsing your whole future into one hard day.
Maybe you needed this reminder! XO, Dr. Jen
Sometimes that does lead to relief.
Sometimes it leads to grief, anger, or clarity you’ve been avoiding.
Feeling better can be an outcome, but it’s not the goal.
Capacity is. Choice is.
Therapy isn’t about feeling better all the time.
If it were, we’d be doing emotional avoidance with better language.
Therapy is about noticing what you actually feel, understanding why it’s there, and learning how to stay present without letting it make every decision for you.
What’s in your control:
- what you do
- what you say
- what you think
What isn’t:
- what other people do
- what other people say
- what other people think
"Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not."
