I was at the grocery store checkout. The woman in front of me was elderly, moving slow. She had cat food, bread, eggs, and tea. She swiped her card. Beep. Declined. She swiped again. Hands shaking. Beep. The line behind us was sighing. Someone checked their watch. The cashier sighed. ‘It’s not going through, Ma’am.’ The woman looked small. ‘I… I just used it yesterday. Let me put the eggs back.’ She started taking things out of the bag. The shame on her face was gut-wrenching. I stepped up. ‘Put it on mine,’ I told the cashier. The woman turned. ‘Oh no, I couldn’t—’ ‘It’s okay,’ I said. ‘My grandmother used to drink that same tea. It’s on her.’ I paid. It was $22. She waited for me in the parking lot. She grabbed my hand with fingers that felt like dry paper. ‘I don’t have anyone left,’ she whispered. ‘I haven’t spoken to a soul in three days. Thank you for seeing me.’ It wasn’t about the groceries. It never is. Look up from your phones. Look at people. We are all just walking each other home.
