@JayDyer was the biggest reason I inquired into Orthodoxy in the first place. His catalogue of apologetics work will be the standard for decades to come. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I’m very happy for him starting an exciting new chapter, but just a little bit sad for myself because there’s a few things more satisfying than watching a Jay Dyer debate. Maybe he will debate other topics, but all of his content is good, so I’m just glad he’s sticking around at least for now. Thanks for everything so far, Jay 🫡

Riding the line between talking theology / doing debates, and all the other issues like geopolitics, lit, satire has been an odd thing. For some it is confusing, for others, not an issue.

However, after 10 years of mixed content, I feel that the time of online theology debate for me has come to a close. No one has of yet told me to say this - it’s a decision I’ve pondered for a while. I would rather focus on other topics I find interesting and religion is authentically at the parish level, not online anyway. It seems as if online theology debate is pretty much done. Onward to producing fun content on the other subjects!

One can read Athanasius anachronistically, seeing terms like penalty and wrath and assume he was using their shared dictionary and assumptions, however Athanasius affirmed a variant of Recapitulation which we refer to as Restored Icon, or the Theosis model.

If one reads Athanasius intending to understand his meaning and view, they are shocked to discover such prooftexts are misleading.

Athanasius uses “wrath” as shorthand for the corruption & death (mortality) that entered the world as a consequence of sin, not divine retributive anger. “Penalty” means the natural consequence of sin such as mortality, decay & separation from divine life... not a synonym for divine wrath. That would be repetitive. Christ, being sinless & not “liable to death” voluntarily enters into our mortality to destroy it from within.

So the question arises, is one more committed to preserving their pet Atonement Theory at all costs, or being a Good Berean of both Scripture and the Early Church? What are we most concerned with? The truth, or our bias?
