The origin of autonomous cars was actually a 'standing on business' moment, 40 YEARS AGO.

Back in the 80s a German engineer named Ernst Dickmanns re-engineered a Mercedes-Benz van with cameras and some sensors that they can control steering wheel, throttle, and brakes through computer commands based on real-time evaluation of image sequences. However, as there some parameters failed, they haven’t released this van to the public.
Also don’t forget that back then, their computational power was like 1000x less than what we have today, so it was a monumental challenge, even for a genius like Dickmanns.

But you know what: Dickmanns’ father didn’t raise no quitter

Later in the 90s, he re-engineered a @MercedesBenz S-Class and performed a demo in Paris on the three-lane highway in standard heavy traffic at speeds up to 130 km/h(81mph). The car changed lanes left and right, kept up with traffic, and drove more than 1,000 km. All on its own.

On that day, the very first autonomous vehicle was brought to life, igniting inspirations and paving the foundations to the technologies we have today.
