Actually I am not sure that the best students don’t join DU. With due respect to Mukul this is an opinion piece and I don’t see any data based evidence to support this assertion.

One constant discussion we have at Ashoka is about how we can attract that student who gets admission to Stephens and SRCC and other good DU colleges.

We win sometimes and sometimes we do not.

Sure overseas and Indian private university options become more affordable to Indians as they become more affluent. Yet many of the sharpest and hungriest Indian students go to DU.

A couple of weeks back I went to give a talk at SRCC. I reached early and got the opportunity to interact with a few students. I filmed some of those interactions.

I will post them here.

I found the students to be focused, intelligent, knowledgeable, hard working and committed to doing something with their lives.

Definitely more hard working and focused than I was at DU in the early eighties.

Each student I spoke to was doing more than one thing - Undergrad Plus CFA or CA or MBA entrance prep.

Today’s DU student will go places with or without institutional input.

Ashoka students will also do very well

Just recd this data from the @AshokaUniv management. A total of 7544 students have enrolled at Ashoka University since inception. Of these 4559 (approx 60%) have received financial aid from the university. Of these 1837 (approx 24% of all students) have received a 100% tuition fee waiver. In addition to this tuition waiver a significant number have received a waiver of hostel fees and on mess food. And some have also got an additional stipend for other personal expenses. At Ashoka we try to be as inclusive as possible. In our internal discussions we have often pledged that no student who has been offered admission to Ashoka should not attend because he or she cannot afford the expense @TVMohandasPai @promila_agarwal @PramathSinha

A bit of an overclaim. The protesting students came and stood outside the door of the class during the ten minute break after the first hour of the class. They shouted slogans for two or three minutes and then went away. I was inside the classroom in a conversation with some students. We continued the conversation without interruption. I had been given prior notice that this would happen and I should not get alarmed. All very civilised. No disruption. My advice to the protesting students - Ashoka is a small community. You want a census - do it yourself. Don’t depend on the admin to do it
