As a high school prospective student-athlete, don’t eliminate a college baseball program simply because you’ve never heard of it.

Most young players know the schools they see on TV.

The Power 4 programs
The Top 25
The College World Series teams
The schools with the best uniforms and biggest social media accounts

But there are hundreds of college baseball programs most high school players have never heard of that provide incredible opportunities.

Great baseball
Great coaches
Great facilities
Great academics
Great opportunities to develop

Since getting into college coaching, I’ve seen programs up close that I previously knew very little about.

I've recruited against them.
I've played against them.
I've seen their players and coaches.

And there are schools that I now view completely differently than I did from the outside.

They're really good!

A school's lack of name recognition to a 17-year-old doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the program and opportunity.

When you are being recruited, don't ask:
“Have I heard of this school?”

Do the research and then ask:
Is it the right ACADEMIC fit?
The right BASEBALL fit?
The right FINANCIAL fit?
The right SOCIAL fit?

Give schools an opportunity before crossing them off your list.

You might discover that the school you've never heard of is exactly where you're supposed to be.

Choose the FIT. Not the most recognizable logo.

Posture matters

Hold your angles throughout the swing:

✅Butt behind your heels
✅Chest over the plate

Get INTO good posture and STAY THERE as you rotate.

Your posture helps determine how your barrel works.

Stay in posture → barrel can stay through the hitting zone.

Come out of posture → barrel comes out of the hitting zone.

It isn't about rotating as fast as possible.

It’s how fast can you rotate while maintaining great posture and staying over the plate.

Turn fast. Hold your angles. Keep the barrel working through the zone.

Willson Contreras is one of the many hitters I love watching.

One thing that really stands out is how violently he rotates while still maintaining the ability to control the barrel.

Sometimes we teach hitters to move so carefully that we accidentally take the athleticism out of the swing.
Contreras is the opposite.

He creates a ton of bat speed. He rotates aggressively. He isn't afraid to swing with intent.

But there is still organization to the movement and control of the barrel.

Create as much speed as you can CONTROL.

College coaches notice a lot more than just your tools.

How you compete after striking out. How you treat your teammates. If your energy changes when things don't go your way.

Talent gets you noticed, but everything else helps coaches decide if they want you in their program.

Every hitter wants more bat speed and higher exit velocities. They are both super important. But once you reach a certain level, your biggest gains usually come elsewhere.

Can you recognize pitches earlier?
Can you control the strike zone and make solid swing decisions?
Can you adjust to different speeds?
Can you consistently find the barrel?

The best hitters don’t just swing faster.
Barrel accuracy, bat path, and swing decisions are what allow that bat speed and power to show up consistently in games.
