In 2022 I argued Kenya's excise rates should move with inflation. Parliament deleted the provision in 2023.
On 1 July 2026, Tanzania legislated exactly that.
Three years of quiet erosion later, my piece in yesterday's Business Daily:

My op-ed in the Business Daily: if vaping is meant to help smokers quit, why is it marketed to the nine in ten African adults who don't use tobacco?
Harm reduction means fewer deaths and less disease, not more sales.

Public participation belongs to Kenyans. Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC protects health policy from tobacco industry interests, including when they speak through others.
Every presenter on the Tobacco Bill should declare industry links, on the record.
#PassTobaccoControlBill2024KE
Stronger tobacco control won't fuel illicit trade. Kenya had the strong administrative systems required by the WHO Illicit Trade Protocol years before ratifying it. Parliament, pass the Bill.

Fridge is full and I am not sorry. Pineapple, hibiscus and a hint of cinnamon. Apple and mint. And one very enthusiastic ginger bug that I am opening over the sink. Flowers from my garden staying right where they are🌺🫧

Sweet flavours. Bright colours. Same poison. Nicotine is addictive by design, it harms the developing brain, and it is built to keep you paying for life. The industry calls it an alternative. The science calls it a trap.

Every stem in this vase came from my garden. Grown, picked and arranged by my own hands. Fresh flowers on the table every other week is my little ceremony, and the whole house always feels softer for it.

In the interim, you will see a lot on tobacco control here. That is by design. The Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill 2024 has passed the Senate and is now before the National Assembly. This is where public voices count the most.

A boy died over his own change while a full bus watched. Years ago a conductor told me to go “sell myself” for asking him for my change. Some people laughed. Same throne, same silence. Cruelty is a choice, and so is silence. I wrote about it, see link.

That’s exactly why we MUST safeguard the Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill 2024 from the tobacco industry and their front groups. They’relobbying hard to delay it, water it down, and keep profiting from our kids. Parliament, pass this Bill without compromise. Protect our children!
🚨 The silent addiction is destroying our children.
Watch this heartbreaking reel: flavored nicotine products (pouches, vapes, cigarettes) are being deliberately made sweet and attractive so they can hook our youth. Jamaal and thousands like him are already trapped.
I feel so sorry for these children. They are too young to understand that this “cool” habit will damage their brains, lungs, and future forever. No child should be fighting addiction before they even finish school.
