Wife lodged an FIR against husband under section 498A after he prevented his wife from eating French fries, rice and meat after childbirth. The Karnataka High Court held that such allegations were too trivial to constitute cruelty warranting criminal prosecution under Section 498A IPC.

Observing that criminal law cannot be invoked over such insignificant domestic disputes, the Court found that continuing the investigation would amount to an abuse of the legal process and expressed concern over the coercive use of measures such as a Look Out Circular.

Consequently, the High Court stayed the investigation against the husband, permitted him to travel to the United States upon his undertaking to cooperate with the investigation, and granted him interim relief.
