@deepakshenoy It's super hard to guess what the market will actually do with all this going on, but your points on oil and defence stocks make a lot of sense. Good to know India isn't too reliant on them right now. Thanks for sharing.

In Mastering the Market Cycle, Howard Marks discusses risk in a way that separates it from volatility. He points out that the most significant risk comes from believing there is no risk. When the market is booming and everyone is euphoric, they tend to forget that things can go wrong. This is the time when they are most willing to take on excessive risk, and the price of that risk—the compensation they demand for it—is at its lowest.
Here is a summary of some of his key ideas on risk:
• Risk vs. Volatility: Marks argues that volatility—the up and down movement of prices—is not the same as risk. He defines risk as the likelihood of permanent loss of capital.
• The Risk Cycle: The perception of risk is highly cyclical. When the market is doing well and prices are rising, people become less risk-averse. They assume that past performance will continue indefinitely and that "this time it's different." . This is when risk is actually at its highest. Conversely, when the market crashes and everyone is fearful, they perceive risk as being at its highest, but this is often the time when it's actually at its lowest, and great opportunities exist.
• The Pendulum of Psychology: Marks uses the metaphor of a pendulum swinging between euphoria and depression, between greed and fear. This swinging of the pendulum is what causes the risk cycle. At the extremes of the swing, investors are most likely to make mistakes.
• The Two Risks: He identifies two main risks for investors: the risk of losing money and the risk of missing an opportunity. You can avoid one by being extremely conservative, but that will expose you to the other. The key is to find a balance and be appropriately aggressive or defensive based on where you are in the market cycle.
You've highlighted an important and often overlooked point. I completely agree with your analogy about funding a house with a short term loan it perfectly illustrates the risks we are facing.
Relying on the stock market for a significant portion of the governments budget is like taking a roller coaster to reach your destination. While the ride might be exciting on the way up, the sudden and severe drops can leave you behind. Long term growth needs a stable and predictable source of funding, not one that fluctuates with investor sentiment and global news.
dependence on a volatile revenue stream seriously threatens our nations long term capital expenditure plans. We are essentially building tomorrows infrastructure with todays unpredictable profits, which is a classic case of a misaligned time horizon.
We must find more reliable and diverse revenue streams possibly through a broader tax base or more efficient public spending. This is a challenge that we absolutely need to address. Thank you for bringing this critical issue to light its the kind of forward thinking analysis essential for a healthy economy.
