Now, a few thoughts on the past year's work:

The most pressing task as the end of 2025 approached was hiring a new technical director. My father, Jeff Mirus, who founded Catholic Culture and programmed much of the website over decades, has been wanting to retire from the technical side of things and focus only on writing.

The task of replacing him, however, was a daunting one for various reasons – the long-term commitment we need for a part-time role, our budget limitations, the competitiveness of the market in this field, the fact that our site is built using code that few programmers know anymore, etc.

I wasn’t even sure where to start looking.

But by God’s providence, as often happens, I didn’t even have to look!

In September, while in Rome visiting with a recent podcast guest, I mentioned our need. He immediately pointed me to a friend – a Lebanese Catholic based in Geneva, with IT experience working for Catholic organizations around the world. We hired Elias as our new technical director in November, and Jeff is currently showing him how our systems work, for the smoothest possible transition.

Meanwhile, Catholic Culture has thrived this year. Our columnists – including Jeff Mirus, Phil Lawler, Peter Wolfgang, and Fr. Jerry Pokorsky – remain steadfast. Jeff and Phil in particular have kept an eye on the news from Rome as Pope Leo XIV settles into his role as the successor of St. Peter. Our four podcasts continue strong, with the most significant new project being Jim Papandrea’s season 5 of Way of the Fathers, which launched earlier this year to cover all the Doctors of the Church.

I myself have written more this year than ever, and I feel I’ve been coming into my own as a writer. This year I was very engaged in present controversies, writing multi-part series in search of the Catholic tradition’s authentic response to contentious issues like feminism and the Jewish people. My aim is always to be radical yet moderate – that is, uncompromising in the difficult truths, yet always governed by the Catholic faith rather than by political reaction.

Yet to my grief, those issues are dividing Christians even more at this moment than when I first wrote about them. It’s a humbling reminder that I can’t really solve these problems by writing about them. What the world needs more is my conversion.

In all this I depend on Divine Providence. Hiring Elias without needing to increase our budget was yet another confirmation of God’s trustworthiness. I am therefore not anxious about raising enough money for next year. Still, cooperation with Providence means asking for what I need.

So I ask Him and I ask you: please help Catholic Culture to continue our mission in 2026!
