In 1575, Poland needed a ruler—and chose the one everyone underestimated. Anna Jagiellonka wore the crown like a warning, she was crowned King of Poland—King, not Queen. She received the title *Rex Poloniae* by design, a deliberate choice by lawmakers of Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to ensure that no future husband could sideline her authority. They had reason to be cautious. Anna was fifty-two on her wedding day—an age that made her an outlier in European royal politics—and for much of her life she had been treated less like a princess than a complication.

Her brother, King Zygmunt August, declined to arrange a marriage for her, leaving her in prolonged isolation while other dynasties expanded their power through alliances. Yet the years did not diminish her; they hardened her resolve. While many rulers chased glory on the battlefield, Anna left a different mark: she financed and completed Warsaw’s first permanent bridge across the Vistula River, an ambitious eighteen-pier structure that reshaped trade and travel and proved she understood governance in concrete, lasting terms. When her brother died and the throne fell vacant, the nobility turned to her reluctantly, seeing in her the last living link to the Jagiellon line—and imagining she could serve as a convenient figurehead.

Anna refused to play that role. She insisted on being crowned as King, then selected her own husband, Stefan Batory, under terms that protected her status and guaranteed shared rule. Batory commanded the army; Anna held the rest of the state’s power and legitimacy together. She outlived him, outlasted her critics, and remained a central force in Polish politics into old age. The woman many had written off as a burden became, in the end, the sovereign the Commonwealth could not afford to lose.
