It's been a long time since I have done any NPR experiments.
So here is one that turned out well: a painterly grass/wheat field.

The grass looks like a painting, but it's a 3D mesh.

Incredibly useful ref both for weapon artists & animators alike. Function & timing. Though this would most likely be hidden for a game asset, it's still great ref.

I just had a math breakthrough!! 🎉

so I've been pondering the elusive cosinc function, and I've been stuck deciding if
(1-cos(x))/x or
(cos(x)-1)/x should be the canonical one

but today I discovered you can define it super cleanly using integrals - this solidifies it for me!

@SheriefFYI This isn't analogous.
1) Cook-time has very little range and external interference;
2) Undercooking is a deal breaker.

On the other hand, restaurants not having an ingredient due supplier's fault isn't unheard of, and that's often communicated to customers.

That reading a paper isn't a straightforward linear process, it was iterative, and that there was a lot of "meta knowledge" not covered in my books.

I didn't get to benefit from this, but I'm thankful for veterans who write openly about these challenges, it's sorely needed. 3/3

I love threads like this, reading these during my undergrad would have helped a lot.

This was a major source of self contempt for me. My uni had an underdeveloped gfx department, mostly self-taught, took me a long time to read papers and presentations and not feel at fault. 1/3

People starting graphics programming often remark that they feel intimidated and struggle to understand gfx presentations and papers, and this year's GDC ones seem very long at first (the pdfs). This should not dissuade people from reading them though, 1/3

Regardless of how much I studied and practiced, there was always a gap of unsaid "meta knowledge", and if you don't have it, it's easy to be dissuaded and feel fated to not understand it.

I was stubborn and after a lot of practice it clicked for me... 2/3

@andrepiske @laurogripa For me there is time/importance changes too, I want to learn asap because I have been through the learning curve so many times that this new skill seems less impacting than previous 1s.

And now I want to spend more time on myself, friends and community.
