I wrote this piece coming home from New York to Vilnius. Back in Lithuania, I found a society in limbo between war and peace, calm on the outside, burning on the inside. Of course, it's nothing compared to the suffering of Ukrainians. My essay for @WSJ.

Zomi was one of the earliest employees at World Central Kitchen. She first showed up to volunteer at our WCK kitchen in Guatemala after the Fuego volcano eruption—and became like family. Zomi was effervescent, her spirit of service embodied the greatest aspects of humanity. Anyone who meets Zomi never forgets her huge smile and warm laugh. When others were facing the darkest of moments, Zomi was a shining light of comfort, and the world is a dimmer place without her. 💔
Last week CNN asked me how I explain the downturn in the news industry: big layoffs, scant investment, no recovery in sight.
A list of factors is not an explanation, I said. But that is what I have.
So here's my thread. None of it should be news to people in the business. 0/
Noura Al-Mawed and Michael Rantisi, students from Vilnius University and Vilnius Tech, are two of only a few Palestinians living in Lithuania. In the latest episode of NARA podcast they share their hopes and grief, as the destruction of Gaza continues.

"It’s everyday guilt that I am safe, my family is safe, I have everything around me, and my people, the Palestinians in Gaza, are being shelled"

One month ago, @MosabAbuToha started texting me a few hundred words a day.
He was still in Gaza. Still sleeping in a school. Still recovering from beatings he got in Israeli custody.
But every day, he typed this story into his phone: https://t.co/bdOsbPdyGM
Let me get this straight: The richest person on earth and owner of a top internet media company, auto company, satellite communications network and space travel company generously funded by the USG believes Jewish control of migration patterns is “the actual truth”?
One of the all-time iconic episodes of @nytimes The Daily today, on the utterly grim situation facing doctors and patients at Gaza’s hospitals https://t.co/FIheVjMnft
Incredibly powerful listening, and gets across how desperate things are in a way that I think only audio can.
🔴UPDATE:
Since last night, we have not been able to contact our staff inside Al-Shifa hospital. Other MSF colleagues living in Gaza city have reported that the hostilities around Al-Shifa have not stopped.
We are worried for their lives.
When I was a student in 1982, I met two Palestinian students on a bus in the West Bank, and we hung out together. I hadn't been in touch since, but on this visit I looked them up. And therein lies a story of lost freedom, dignity and hope. A gift link: https://t.co/KmmT72jmGJ
„Aš jaučiuosi brolis ir pusbrolis žmonių, kurie žuvo. Su žydais, izraeliečiais, jaučiuosi kaip giminaitis. Aš maksimaliai jaučiau liūdesį, neviltį, skausmą. Bet jokio keršto (noro) nebuvo.“

Tired, yet happy. A selfie with fellow Lithuanian audio documentary creators at the Prix Europa awards this Friday in Berlin. Colleagues from @narajournalism and LRT Radio were both nominated for their exceptional documentary work.
Along with many of our Israeli human rights partners, we call on the international community to act to stop the forcible transfer currently happening in the West Bank. This madness must not be allowed to continue and our government clearly has no intention of stopping it.
The humanitarian system in Gaza is facing a total collapse with unimaginable consequences for more than 2 million civilians.
Needs are growing ever more critical & colossal.
Food, water, medicine & fuel must be allowed to reach all civilians swiftly, safely & at scale.
⚠️ HAPPENING NOW AT NYC'S GRAND CENTRAL STATION: THOUSANDS OF JEWS AND ALLIES HOLD AN EMERGENCY SIT-IN, DEMANDING A CEASEFIRE IN GAZA. WE'RE TAKING OVER THE GRAND CONCOURSE. WE'RE REFUSING TO ALLOW A GENOCIDE BE CARRIED OUT IN OUR NAMES. CEASEFIRE NOW! NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE! ⚠️
“The most important thing for me and also for my brother, is that his death will not be used as a justification for killing innocent people”
Listen to Noi Katzman who’s Brother Chaim was buried today
We must not lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians had nothing to do with Hamas’s appalling attacks, and are suffering as a result of them.
The Israeli Defense Forces took CNN’s @AndersonCooper to visit the site of the Nova music festival, where 260 people were killed. Watch the report for @AC360:
