Spent a very engaging session today with the first cohort of nearly 100 women at the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre for Ethics and Politics.

My session focused on the basics of political strategy and communication — how an issue becomes a narrative, how narratives build public connect, how power is mapped, and how communication must ultimately lead to organised action.

What made the session special was the energy in the room. These were not passive participants, but women from across Tamil Nadu who have already been active on the ground and are now sharpening their understanding of leadership, strategy and public communication.

During the 1876–77 Great Famine in Madras Presidency, Thanjavur (the “rice bowl”) paid ₹68.7 lakhs in British taxes about ₹6,000 crore in today’s money.
Under the Ryotwari system, farmers were taxed 50% on dry land and 60% on irrigated land. Meanwhile British Forced India to export massive quantities of rice to Europe:
- 1875–76: ~49,500 tons
- 1876–77: ~29,500 tons
- 1877–78: ~19,000 tons
- 1878–79: ~31,500 tons
