❗️Why does a football team perform like it does?

Honestly, in the big picture — everyone more or less just follows a fairly predictable curve within the boundaries of its financial resources. There is always a Leicester, Brighton or Bournemouth. In 15 years, odds are that they will have been replaced by Norwich, WBA and Ipswich — or any other 3 random teams from a group of like 40-50.

🔺This deserves to be pointed out — because you so often see arguments like ’how can Bournemouth and Iraola perform so well with a stadium that only takes 549 spectators and team X struggle despite having much more resources?’

🔺That argument is simply invalid. You have what 40-50 clubs in the England and Wales who could be ”Bournemouth”, and you compare one club with the one of those 40-50 clubs that is at the very top of its ”curve” at that very point.

It doesn’t work in either direction. You can’t claim that Rosenior was doing a great job because he would avoid relegation with Chelsea in the PL while Leicester’s manager got them relegated from the Championship. Right?

We also know for a fact that — CHANGING — to a successful manager has a very limited positive impact on results. Sure, it’s complicated and hypothetical — but it’s a proven fact every time you look at someone like Thomas Frank going from team A where he did well to team B that is performing poorly — odds are overwhelming that team B won’t perform better.

🔺With that said, changing from a manager that is working — can have a very negative effect. Not always, like with Brentford. But it often does.

I think this just shows how extremely complex football is. Sometimes the stars align and something works.

At the bottom line — it all comes down to being consistent and taking the right decisions and doing the right things.

We have already forgotten about it — but City were crap last season and had a really ugly stint this season. Then Rodri is healthy and they buy Guehi and Semenyo — and all of a sudden we start to take for granted that Guardiola is a wonder manager who never can fail. Which 100% is incorrect. Guardiola has received extreme backing the last 1.5 years. Don’t give him that backing and give him an injury crisis including Rodri — and he could just as well sit at 15th in the PL.
