In 2021, when Israel bombed Gaza & killed hundreds, I shared how disappointed I was in my design community for their silence.

Today, that silence is getting dangerously close to *silencing*.

We talk about empathy, diversity, equality, & human rights yet find it hard to speak up.

If you need a “familiar story” to empathize, here’s me repeating mine.

I grew up in Palestine and lived through the second Palestinian uprising in 2000.

In 2002, when Israel invaded the all cities in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers woke my family and I up at 2 AM with guns pointed to our faces and asked us to leave our house.

They took it over. We left during an Israeli imposed curfews to a friends’ house. That same night, Israeli forces occupied that house. We were kicked out again.

For 12 years living in Palestine, I was harassed, searched at checkpoints, and shot at going to school or coming back from it. That was my life. And guess what? I felt so lucky.

I realize how screwed up that is now but I genuinely felt lucky. Although I lived in fear my whole life, I didn’t lose a family member.

See, when you live under an illegal and brutal occupation, you learn to count your blessings.

But that’s not okay. It’s not okay for children in Palestine to learn to count their blessings losing one parent but not the other. It’s not okay to ignore the occupation because it’s too political or it’s too much to speak up.

This is also why the “two sides” and “truth in the middle” framing doesn’t work. One side is an occupying force and the other is an occupied people. You can condemn the murder of Palestinian children without being worried about supporting anything else.

I hate reliving and retelling these stories but it breaks my heart to see Palestinians go through this again and again.

You can help change the narrative. You can make all of us Palestinians feel less isolated, especially as part of this community. You can make us feel safe to speak up without feeling scared to lose our jobs, our dreams, or our communities.

Just like you don’t get to take an “All Lives Matter” position to oppression and police brutality, you don’t get to take a “all sides need to stop” position on occupation and human rights violations, especially when the US funds the weapons Israel uses.

If you needed a familiar face or a friend to explain this, It’s me. It’s the millions of Palestinians counting on you and I to speak up. Speak up.

If after reading this, you’re jumping to your keyboard to argue and not empathize, regardless where you stand on this, please pause. Unless your intention is to intimidate the voices speaking up, figure out how you can help.
