I was invited to London in mid-February to consult on the formation of an assembly of Iranian political figures united by their belief in democracy and pluralism. Alongside more than 30 members of the community, a ‘Coordination Council’ was formed with the objective of shaping a larger convening of nearly 400 participants at the end of March, what would become the Iran Freedom Congress (IFC).

I have supported the formation of the IFC because democracy is grounded in pluralism,  the coexistence of a wide range of perspectives, even those that strongly conflict with one another. From the outset when I was invited, the premise was clear: to bring together individuals who may hold differing political views and even personal disagreements, yet who understand that in this moment of national crisis, open dialogue, cooperation, and shared responsibility are essential to achieving a stable and lasting transition to democracy in Iran. My role, as always, has been that of a neutral, nonpartisan bridge-builder, and during the initial meeting I shared my specific recommendations on how this initiative could succeed.

It was also expressed that participation in this Congress should not be interpreted as mutual endorsement, but rather as a shared commitment to the principle that pluralism is the only viable path forward. While I completed my role in the first meeting, I continue to encourage the Iran Freedom Congress to apply the broadest possible definition of pluralism and expand its invitation list even more. If the goal is to replace the Islamic Republic, then all voices advocating for regime change and democracy must be included in this effort. Ultimately, it will be the Iranian people who determine their political future through a democratic process, one person, one vote at the ballot box.

Going forward, those with demonstrated support inside Iran and the capacity to mobilize others should play a leading role in this next phase, guided by expert counsel into what is achievable. Though I am not attending, I remain available to this group and others, continuing to serve as a bridge between individuals and factions in pursuit of our shared goal: ending tyranny and violent suppression, and advancing a democratic future.

At this time of existential threat to the future of our homeland, I urge Prince Reza Pahlavi’s team to recognize the necessity of broadening their base. Essential voices, particularly leaders of Iran’s diverse ethnic communities and prominent civil society figures inside the country who have made significant sacrifices for freedom, must be heard, and their demands incorporated into any transitional framework.

At the same time, I ask those who carry past grievances or oppose  Prince Reza Pahlavi as the sole leader to acknowledge that he has substantial popular support as a transitional figure, both inside and outside Iran. Denying this reality serves no one.

Acknowledging the realities of support across different segments of society is essential if a truly representative and effective coalition is to emerge. 

If these different groups are willing to share their influence proportionally, and where necessary, relinquish some of it for the greater good and broader national interest above individual positions, the result will be a coalition that truly represents Iranian society, complete with the checks and balances a democracy requires. 

Without such a broad and inclusive coalition, the opposition risks not being seen or considered as a credible alternative. In that case, external actors may continue to engage with familiar regime figures and bypass a unified opposition entirely. If we truly care about Iran, we need to come together and to do so quickly. This moment is urgent, and without meaningful steps toward greater unity, the opportunity before us could be lost, and that is what I fear the most. (Continuation 👇)

Recognizing that no single person or group can alone shoulder the Herculean task of toppling the Islamic Republic’s militarized regime, an “Iran Freedom Congress” will convene on March 28–29 in London.

To help shape this Congress, a working group of 30 concerned Iranians already come together on Feb 23-24. This gathering included prominent political figures from across the political spectrum (from constitutional monarchists to those on the left, as well as Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Arab Ahwazi, and Baloch representatives, and civil society activists, many of whom are directly connected to key figures and networks inside Iran.)

The ‘Iran Freedom Congress’ is not a political party. It is a broad-based, inclusive assembly of Iranians committed to pluralism, democracy, and inclusivity. It is not opposed to any movement or figure, including Crown Prince
Reza Pahlavi, and the successful momentum around him, but instead is intended as a necessary platform for cooperation, coordination, and mediation among diverse democratic forces.

With the risk of war in the coming days and potential removal of theocratic dictator Khamenei, many Iranians fear another regime insider being elevated, or internal civil conflict. Preventing such outcomes requires unity now, not later. Only with unity in diversity can we ensure a peaceful, stable, and lasting transition to democracy.

The United States including @USAmbUN and our Western allies have sent a clear signal that unity among Iran’s democratic forces is essential. The Iran Freedom Congress is a direct response to this moment and to that call.
