🚨 Important details about the talks between Peter Jackson and the Tolkien Estate, and the rights to The Silmarillion and Tolkien’s other works:

First of all, we need to understand what The Silmarillion actually is. It covers the beginning of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, its mythology, the Valar and other divine beings, and thousands of years of history that take place long before The Lord of the Rings. In a way, it’s almost like the sacred book and history of Middle-earth.

Because of that, making a film or TV series covering The Silmarillion as a whole would be extremely difficult. It would be incredibly expensive, and turning the entire book into one coherent screenplay while staying faithful to Tolkien’s work would be a huge challenge.

So when we talk about possible Silmarillion movies for Peter Jackson and Warner Bros., we are really talking about individual stories such as Beren and Lúthien, The Children of Húrin, The Fall of Gondolin, and The Fall of Númenor.

There isn’t one single, continuous story in The Silmarillion that could simply be adapted from beginning to end like The Lord of the Rings. It is made up of different legends, histories, and stories covering thousands of years.

There is also the question of the rights. Buying the rights to this material could potentially cost an enormous amount of money, perhaps even more than $1 billion depending on what exactly is being negotiated.

Amazon paid the Tolkien Estate $250 million for the television rights to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and the material in the Appendices, which includes much of the history of the Second Age. If that figure is taken as a reference point, getting the rights to four major stories from The Silmarillion could easily become a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

That’s why I think Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. are probably negotiating for individual stories rather than trying to acquire the rights to The Silmarillion as a whole.

We already know that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens have talked in the past about wanting to make a movie about Beren and Lúthien. It’s possible they already have ideas or even some early script material for these stories, but there has been no confirmation of that, so that part is just my own speculation.

So, if Peter Jackson, Warner Bros., and the Tolkien Estate eventually reach an agreement, I think the most realistic possibility would be individual films based on stories such as Beren and Lúthien, The Children of Húrin, The Fall of Gondolin, and The Fall of Númenor rather than a single Silmarillion movie.

🚨 Peter Jackson had, in recent months, confirmed that he and Warner Bros. were actively in talks with the Tolkien Estate to acquire the film rights to The Silmarillion.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Jackson revealed that discussions have finally become possible because a “new generation” within the Tolkien Estate is now more open to adaptations than in the past.

For years, Christopher Tolkien strongly opposed Hollywood interpretations of his father’s deeper mythology, fiercely protecting works like The Silmarillion from being turned into films.

Middle-earth could expand far beyond Hobbits, Rings, and the War of the Ring.

The birth of Sauron’s darkness.

Stories so massive, tragic, and ancient that even The Lord of the Rings feels small beside them.

Jackson also explained that he’s excited by the idea of finally adapting complete standalone stories instead of relying only on the brief historical appendices attached to LOTR.

And fans are already dreaming about what this could mean:

Beren and Lúthien.

The Children of Húrin.

The Fall of Gondolin.

The Fall of Númenor.

Right now, the project remains in early negotiations, and no official deal has been finalized yet.

But for Tolkien fans…

Just hearing Peter Jackson say the words “The Silmarillion” and “film rights” in the same sentence already feels unreal.
