A tragic helicopter crash occurred on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania 🇹🇿 on December 24, 2025, claiming the lives of all five people on board. The aircraft was an Airbus Helicopters H125 (also known as AS350 B3), registered 5H-KMA, operated by KiliMedAir Aviation (under Savannah Aviation Limited). It was conducting a medical evacuation mission for ill climbers when it crashed shortly after takeoff from a helipad at Barafu Camp.

The crash site was in Barafu Valley on the southeastern side of the mountain, at an altitude of around 4,670 to 4,700 meters, between Barafu Camp and Kibo Hut on popular routes like Machame or Lemosho. Witnesses reported the aircraft falling minutes after departure and bursting into flames on impact around 17:45 to 18:00 local time. Nearby rescue teams, including guides from Altezza Travel, reached the scene quickly but confirmed there were no survivors.

The victims were two Czech tourists, Plos David and Plosova Anna, who were reportedly the patients being evacuated along with their tour guide Jimmy Mbaga; Zimbabwean pilot Constantine Mazonde; and medical doctor Jimmy Daniel. The climbers were affiliated with Mikaya Tours. High-altitude operations on Kilimanjaro are notoriously challenging due to thin air, unpredictable weather, and rugged terrain, and KiliMedAir frequently performs multiple rescues daily during peak season.

The cause of the crash remains unknown and is under investigation by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), with Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa confirming initial details. Aircraft incidents on Africa's highest peak (5,895 meters) are rare, with the previous fatal one dating back to a small plane crash in November 2008 that killed four people. Mount Kilimanjaro draws about 50,000 climbers each year, making altitude-related evacuations common.

Let me jog your mind kidogo. When we were kids, we watched a film called Gods must be crazy. In this film, the bushmen(the san) are seen chewing a succulent plant called hoodia to quench thirst and hunger. This plant is what the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa has been using to make slimming pills, the ones people are swallowing all over the world. In 2003, the bushmen petitioned CSIR, mtu aliwachanua, and they won the petition in the grounds that they are the inhabitants of the forest this tree is made. On 28th March 2023, they signed a benefit-sharing agreement in the Northern Cape, in terms of which the community was to receive between R8-million and R12-million from the sales of slimming pills. I read about it in campus. The concept behind calling herbalists witches was to keep Africans from herbal drugs so that the resources could be exploited for pharmaceutical companies.
