After South Carolina reverses its position, Continental Congress votes to declare INDEPENDENCE from Britain, adopting a legal separation from the Crown.

Charles Thomson, Secretary for Continental Congress, uses hash marks to note how many colonies voted for the severance from the Crown.

John Adams writes in a letter to his wife, Abigail, that “the second day of July, 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in American history.”

But although newspapers report the independence, no mass celebrations break out.

Thomas Paine publishes an open letter in the Pennsylvania Evening Post, under the name “Republicus,” which advocates for the name “United States of America” for the new nation now emerging.

This is the first time such a term has been used.

Jimmy buys an old school and sticks someone inside. Each week they get tutors for the subject at hand, then on Friday they take a test. Pass a subject, get $5k. Start with 5 subjects. First week is 1st grade, 2nd is 2nd, etc.(1/3)

Person has to stay in the building (“in the circle”), cooking their own meals in the school kitchen, sleeping in a classroom, etc. Challenges/bribes available to skip a subject for a week, reduce number of questions, and grade on a “curve”. (2/3)

@mhp_guy They are all healthy now, but we had some bad times in there. I just wanted to crawl into a hole and cry, but friends supported us and loved on us. Got tired of hearing people ask about them (and not about me). I get why people default to that, but wanted deeper conversations.
