Farm Strong. Blessed & watchful to be a blessing. Joyful seeker of peace. Straightforward God-seeker. Personal motto: Cats & Clouds, Sunshine & Seashells.
@mattvanswol Your wording makes it sound like the situation never happened. I believe you mean 60 Minutes never ran the story, but it sounds like we shouldn't believe FEMA didn't do anything wrong. Need to rephrase it so people understand correctly. FEMA mostly gave out pretty brochures.
Generally, if children have emergency medical needs, Medicaid will nearly always be available. For kids, it's less income-dependent in most states. Adults are case-dependent; there is a category for devastating medical needs. Also, hospitals generally have charitable funds. Doctors and clinics, not so much. Do I support leaning on government? Nope. But if you're worried about kids' care, it can mean some peace of mind.
@FitFusion__ My grandmother's name was Fern Alma. Her mother's name was Birdie Nellie Bly, named for the famous journalist and adventurer in the late 1880's; she traveled the world in 72 days, and wrote about going undercover in a mental asylum as an advocate for the poor and ill.
We hadn't been to a farmer's market in years, but decided to visit a few recently. Eggs were $12 a dozen (we get pastured eggs from a local farm for $5/dozen) and grass-fed beef started at $12.99/lb for burger (we get it from a farm for $7.99/lb). We did find some good produce, but nothing that would make us want to go again. I had a business for 27 years; I understand the overhead and difficulty, especially with employment taxes. But nope. Farmer's markets are no longer in our budget.
@YATPOfficial A friend's 1-year old, still nursing, skidded on a pencil on the tile floor. With toddler shoes & leather soles, she fell hard and sustained a spiral fracture. At the hospital, the parent were accused of abuse, the baby removed from the home. It took a year to get her back.
@QuantumGuard17 If bartenders are held responsible if they allow someone to get drunk, leave the bar, and harm someone, then why aren't judges held responsible when they release criminals? Shouldn't the bar be even higher for judges?
@DesireeAmerica4 Tragic. Also tragic that such people try to declare themselves to be "Christians." Pretty sure Jesus has different ideas than these people. And you can also be sure that the other children were watching the hypocrisy. Unfathomable.
My grandfather & his wife both passed away with severe dementia. They lived independently with loads of family help daily for years, but there came a time when they were no longer safe in their home. Grandpa brought home 21 decrepit lawnmowers from the alley dumpsters and rigged up a pulley to put a few on the roof. They took off the toilet seat to hang it on the wall as a frame for a family photo. They thought it was beautiful and a clever use of the seat. They were no longer able to manage hygiene or cooking, but they still had strength and mobility. They became a danger to themselves. It was a complicated, difficult decision, but they were admitted to a skilled nursing facility with dementia care. They were able to share a room. One of the hardest things the family has ever been through, but we were all involved and shared daily time together. I would never make someone promise not to put me in long-term care. Sometimes, it's the only option.
@homemakinghunny My parents were consistent and firm about a 7 p.m. bedtime for their 5 kids. We had plenty of flexibility when company or holidays arrived, sure, but sleep is essential for growth and development. It's okay to be the grown-up, people. Be the parent and provide structure.
@GigaBeers It's the way culture works. One day, no one will use Tiffany or Mikayla or Peyton or Taylor. And Karen & Kathy & Debbie sound old and gray. My grandma's best friends were Agnes, Myrtle, Mazola, and Fuzzy. My mom's friends were Janice, Loretta, and Nadine.
@LP3kids@DrCamiloOrtiz Yep. My sister read about the methods used in the Soviet Union (diapers were scarce & living conditions harsh/crowded), where they started by 6 months. Both of my nieces did great with it. It's all about the parenting, honestly; we have to be willing to be aware and structured.
@Ivana331Mendez@DrCamiloOrtiz Do the research. It's common across many cultures. Read the book, "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day." It worked perfectly for both our kids. And nobody said a 1-year old gets the hygiene done. But they're perfectly capable of getting their pants up/down & sitting on the potty.
As a social worker, I met with people on oxygen who insisted on continuing to smoke. I met with one who was hospitalized due to explosion when smoking while on oxygen. It was her second time with the same experience. I understand; it's tough to quit smoking. But turn off the oxygen, y'all.
@GlobeFarrah I was a skilled nursing facility social worker. My grandfather & wife (ages 84/82), as well as my father-in-law, needed long-term care; they functioned at the level of toddlers after years of decline. Sometimes long-term care is needful. Dementia is a heart-breaking loss.
@DisaffectedPod Yes. I am truly concerned for the future. Yount people are blank. While out walking, I pass kids at their bus stops. Just zombies glued to cell phones. Screens, American "nutrition," social media - I cannot fathom what our culture will be like in 20 years.
@NancyH_60 My parents took us out of school in mid-December and we weren't back in school until April. 5 kids, ages 7 to 14; U.S. road trip. None of us missed a thing. We just picked right back up & did great with high test scores at the end of the school year. Do it, people.
@thriving__kids We are the first generation to literally change the physiology of the developing brain in infants and children. There's hard data confirming screens are a negative input for growing brains. You can never replace the development if it's missing in the first 6 years of life.
@longdepzai_n Humans are quite literally the only mammal that gives it's children over to the care of strangers. Naked mole rats give newborns over to the care of aunts, and yes, there are communities that participate with young ones (elephants, primates), but none to strangers except us.
@txsalth2o There's a dental device that keeps the jaw and tongue stable when sleeping (major cause of snoring). It's not cheap, around $800, but talk to your dentist about it. Honestly, it's miraculous. Marriage life-saver.
