To any DePaul students who are considering HST 398 - Chicago History Museum Experience, take it!!! I've learned so much from this class, as an education major I feel like I'm coming away with knowledge of public history and great tools to use in my future classroom #dpph

The Haymarket exhibit in the Crossroads of America inspired me with this quote from August Spies. It's so important for museums to display the work of activists in the past to inspire activists today - this is definitely a responsibility of public history #dpph

Working on our group presentation has made me think so much more about the definition of public history, and why it's so difficult to pin down with one definition. Public history can mean a lot of different things, depending on the community it relates to. #dpph

One of the things I love most about this subject is that it's truly accessible for anyone - while academia may be limiting to some, public history can be built and curated by the community itself. #dpph

City on Fire also uses interactive activities to engage with a younger audience. The fire engine has a variety of activities that are not only fun, but also teach kids about how different technology was in the past, and why it was so hard for firefighters to do their job. #dpph

Learning history is important for children even at a young age, but a historical museum may not seem like it would appeal to children as much as a museum that is targeted for a younger audience. However, history can be just as exciting and engaging as any other subject! #dpph

City on Fire also uses first-hand accounts/primary sources, but from a population that children can relate to. The stories told by the children who experienced the event themselves can help kids relate to the exhibit by encouraging them to think about what they might do. #dpph

The Chicago Jazz & Blues exhibit @ChicagoMuseum is a great example of a space that uses not only its artifacts and labels to make the room interesting, but also the ambiance, music, and interactive props to make the visitor feel like they're actually part of the experience. #dpph

What a creative place to put a label! I love seeing how passionate designers are with their work in museums. Details like this make the experience of walking through the exhibit so much more interesting and engaging. #cityonfire #dpph

Light, color, and sound have so much power in exhibits. City on Fire in @ChicagoMuseum utilizes these elements so well - it's complete mood shift from chaos to decimation and desperation. These pictures definitely don't do it justice so check it out for yourself! #dpph

I wish field trips were more available to older students, but it's just not possible for many districts. It's still important to incorporate museum resources into our curriculum, tho. If we can't bring the high schoolers to the museums, we can bring the museums to them! #dpph

It's always interesting to see artwork from many different countries - collections do not need to be homogeneous in their nature. It's also useful to see a variety of perspectives displayed in the same collection. #dpph

Museums don't have to be limited to an indoor space! Recently I visited the Sculpture Park in Schaumburg and enjoyed learning about art pieces from artists around the world. #dpph

As an education major, it's important to remember how valuable museums can be as a resource to our curriculum - especially when we are encouraging students to think like a historian or engage in their community through a civic education. #dpph

It was so interesting to hear Erica Griffin talk about her work with engaging students in modern history through the Voids Project yesterday! The student engagement in the Facing History exhibit reminded me of our conversation in class. #dpph
