The whole walking city discourse assumes you must live in a city to have amenities w/in walking distance. England, where I live, is different. I live in a town of 8k, & almost everything I need is w/in walking distance. Yet I also have a house w/garden, trees, & privacy! BOBW.
I have lived for 25 years in a large city without a car and apparently a bunch of you find this to be physically impossible, so go ahead and ask me anything
What I’d like to know is how come in Britain 24°C feels like a sauna but 19°C feels like we’re back to winter. Men were topless in the supermarket a week ago, today everyone’s back in jumpers and big coats. Last week I’m browsing air conditioning units on the Argos website, this week I’ve put my heating back on! Ridiculous country. 😂
My Polish house cleaner was just telling me they’re moving to Poland. I asked if she had right to remain here, and she does, but she said they wouldn’t want to ever move back.
Britain in 2016: We fucking hate Poles. Deport them all and replace them with Pakistanis

@ToniHargis Yes! I’ve been wanting to do a Thames walk. People complain about driving too far (from here, it’s about 30 minutes to my favourite walks).
Frankel to Rubio: "It is crazy that you want to let people in from South Africa because they can assimilate, while you're throwing out hundreds of thousands of people who have already assimilated and that are important parts of our economy and family life."
Years ago white nationalist congressman Steve King gets censured for his views by party & defeated in a primary by Randy Feenstra, a clean cut christian conservative.
Tonight Feenstra may lose his Gov primary to a no-name MAGA weirdo powered by an endorsement from
…Steve King
The rain of the past 24 hours has made this June already the wettest for 4 years, with the wettest 24 hours for 6 years. A week on from the hottest May day how our weather amazes
@grace_hawthorn We use Viovet for dog food because even with a car, lugging those around is no fun! Plus they have a specialized diet that isn’t easily found elsewhere.
@Ms_laffsalot Cellars! That’s something else that doesn’t exist here for the most part. Air cons and basements, both are things Britain needs to invest in to navigate climate change.
Just a heads up for Americans, the British weather discourse is turning to storms, thunder, lightning etc so get your arguments ready for why we need to DO SOMETHING about this phenomenon that rarely happens here instead of just moan about it.
I also have a car, which allows me to take my dogs on hikes, drag home tons of plants for the garden, furniture I buy at antique fairs, and take day trips. I wouldn't want to be w/out my car, but I also wouldn't want to have to use it to get food or to see a film.
