A5: Taking a look at your own views on substance abuse and abusers is important. These are people with lives, problems, loved ones, bills, etc. Go into their care without biases and treat substance abuse like other diseases we treat. #NursesStopOpioidAbuse
A5c: The South Louisville Opioid Task Force is fighting the opioid crisis in south Louisville and fighting for the hiring of recovering opioid users into the workforce. #NursesStopOpioidAbuse https://t.co/5iED5NBBUS
@DrRankinPeds I can give the clinical definition, but in KY it means broken families & communities, clogged courts, crowded jails, and strained social services. It means revisiting the idea we can incarcerate our way out of this problem and investing in treatment, training, and education.
Decreasing the amt of opioid scrips leads to other problems. Patients are still addicted and turn to harder and more dangerous substances. Research and funds need to be targeted to recovery and post recovery care to help re-establish healthily into society. #nursesstopopioidabuse
A5A: There a magnitude of government agencies (too many?) who are stakeholders in programs combating the opioid epidemic ranging from the CDC to the Veterans Health Association. Policy is great, but action is even better. #nursesstopopioidabuse
@findhelpnowky @DrRankinPeds The opioid epidemic is a disease that definitely affects the physical, mental, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects of the person and their surroundings (friends, family, work, etc.)
@DrRankinPeds A1: For KY in 2012, HB1 started the process of limiting the prescription of opiates such as Opana and Oxycontin. Unfortunately it didn't address treatment of addiction issues in the state. Our prescription opiate addicts became heroin addicts, quickly. #NursesStopOpioidAbuse
A1: Epidemic = widespread disease in a community, opioid = referring to the drug class opiates used for their pain and sedative process. There is a fine line between when a drug is medicinally beneficial and when it is detrimental to the patient. #nursesstopopioidabuse
