Valuable new analysis of Australian suicide deaths data from AIHW shows that years of life lost to suicide has increased over time to 2019, and that in 2019 the suicide burden is 2x higher in lowest socioeconomic areas compared to highest, higher with increasing remoteness 1/....
@DrGuyCameron Guy that’s awful. PhDs are hard enough of themselves. Not sure what else to say other than credit to you for finding your way through and finding your place. May those experiences be behind you, the best yet to come and strength there for each new day.
And if you want something that will make you smile, the ending of this does it for me every time. Made by Courage Bug in collaboration with a psych inpatient ward- a 6 min stop motion video about depression https://t.co/OuoQR29DTw 2/2
The good thing with the 3MT comp is it’s now online…and this video was how my friends & fam got a sense of what I’ve been doing for the past couple of years…so if you’ve got 3 mins find out about my vision for a ‘self harm fitbit for health services’ 1/2

We're in the home stretch of #SciCommSeptember team!
And today's prompt is share a video..
For some of you this one could be quite a challenge! It doesn't have to be of your face, just try and share something awesome that's going on in your world!
The people who work in suicide prev are great. Ready to laugh (and cry). Stand up for what they believe in. And don’t mind a dress up…and always join me on the dance floor…sooner or later…
The other myth worth busting is people often think suicide prev= depressing…it is challenging- finding the balance of staying connected to the topic of suicide and what it means for people’s lives and having enough distance to not be overwhelmed is an ongoing practice…but-
@NicoleTMHill @Dr_KatrinaWitt @orygen_aus@NSRFIreland@DrFortune2@Uni_Newcastle So I’ve been chuckling because I keep ending up in sessions with people who I know and love…and I’m like this is one of the reasons why- we love the same things….while also going possibly I didn’t need to join a world congress to make that happen!
@bleckning @Dr_KatrinaWitt If only we had screens on participants I would have dared you to do an interpretative dance…and ask what he makes of it! Instead you’ll just have to gif me at the end to give us the review 😆
@sarahlwayland@jaeleaskehan And my trusty sidekick. And it has NEVER EVER occurred to me that part of the appeal of f2f conferences is it means time alone…and waking up when I want…and not having to prepare anyone’s food…and…anyway- never ever!!
I couldn’t finish without celebrating my Mum’s work. A multimedia artist who made her living as a GP- and whose black dog means suicide is something that visits when things are tough. Her latest series is called ‘glimpses of life through a pandemic’..looking in and out of windows
#SciCommSeptember Lots of well known and varied artists have lived with/through suicidal crisis or attempt- from Walt Disney, Elton John, Oprah to Monet. They have brought joy to others through their art. But it’s not limited to just well known people…
It's art of your STEM day for #SciCommSeptember!
I am sooooo looking forward to seeing what you've got, either art you've made yourself or someone else who does some awesome STEM art!
Lets go!
Have you seen the Man Up documentary hosted by @GusWorland? A partnership between media experts & suic prev to get men and those who care about them thinking and talking about suicide and what gets in the way of saying I’m struggling. https://t.co/32v0ahLw1p Lastly…
