What the United States might have looked like if every treaty made with Native American nations had been fully honored.
Between 1778 and 1871, the United States ratified around 370 treaties with Native American nations.
Under the U.S. Constitution, these treaties became the supreme law of the land, recognizing tribal sovereignty while guaranteeing territory, hunting rights, and other protections.
Historians generally agree that most of these treaties were later violated, ignored, or significantly altered through forced removals, land seizures, acts of Congress, and other government actions as the United States expanded westward.
In 1871, Congress ended the practice of making treaties with Native nations, though all previously ratified treaties remained legally binding.
Based on treaty boundaries and later court rulings recognizing lands that were never lawfully ceded, this map illustrates how different the United States might have looked if those treaty obligations had been fully honored.
