Habibi, you can easily tell that what befell Eddy Mutwe crossed a line and broke a cord in many. Most of the negative responses to that fundraiser fall back to how Eddy Mutwe was - and still is being - inhumanly treated.

Yet, if we believe the court, all that was because Eddy Mutwe “stole a jumper”, but if we believe Museveni’s son, Eddy Mutwe’s actual sin was not knowing Lunyankore. So he stepped in to “teach him”.

From my reading history - and this is not to justify anything he did - Idi Amin actually had enough reasons to be paranoid. With Kenya harbouring Ugandan dissidents, Sudan hostile to his regime, Tanzania not only harbouring dissidents but rebels who tried to overthrow his regime less than a year into power in September 1971; and powerful nations like Israel, Britain, Apartheid South Africa, and America all openly calling for his overthrow, sanctioning his regime, or working in other ways to undermine it, it is easy to see why he acted with such brutality to fight off the “enemies of Uganda and imperialists” against his regime.

Yet, for the most part Mr Eddy Mutwe was a normal citizen. A bodyguard, and a barber, with a known address living in Kampala. He went about his business normally on a daily. If the police summoned him, most likely he would have turned up to answer questions. Yet, the decision taken at a high level was to abduct, hold him incommunicado, torture him, make jokes about it on Twitter, and share pictures to prove it all. It’s really hard to justify any of this from a rational viewpoint. Not even Jamil Mukulu was treated so inhumanly despite being a suspected mastermind of an internationally recognised terror group.

Anyway, Allan Paton warned us in “Cry, the Beloved Country”, “My greatest fear is that one day, when they turn to loving, they will find that we are turned to hating.”
It is obvious that some Ugandans have been pushed so much that they have turned to hating. What is not clear is how many they are. Hopefully, the Rubicon is still ahead; yet to be crossed. Maybe a meter away, or even inches, but one can hope that it has not been crossed - at least not yet…
