This is a new paper with an amazing team. We analyze monetary policy in a heterogeneous-bank model featuring fixed- and variable-rate banking systems.

Banks are heterogeneous in size and leverage, and they face regulatory capital requirements that can trigger bank failures.

First question is of course:
🤔 Does it matter how you solve and filter? Yes!
▶️Using a global model solution as data-generating process shows 1st and 2nd-order perturbation solutions result in biased parameter estimates (see Figure: outside option nu and bargaining power eta in the DMP model). Our proposed method (labeled in the figure as TVKF) is many times faster than existing nonlinear solution and filtering methods (e.g., global + particle filter) but just as accurate!

📣New updated version of my paper "Tariffs and Monetary Policy". Now including an analysis of *optimal* monetary policy.

Key insight: optimal mp is significantly more expansionary than under a common CPI-targeting policy, which displays a "tightening bias".

@drmehmetismail @anishgiri I have thought about this too, this could solve some basic issues with transmission at least in the meantime whilst more advanced transmitters can be built into pieces - the latter could certainly be resolved quickly - lack of investment is the issue in my opinion.
