Might I respectfully suggest that the umbrella is the entire problem? Transvestites & transsexuals are as different as chalk & cheese. As are gay people from ‘asexuals’, ‘non-binary’ or ‘straight’ people who identify as ‘qu**r’. All quite different.

No one ever said they ‘identified AS’ anything over 10-15 years ago. Identified WITH, absolutely. But nobody back then was attempting to impinge upon another group’s rights. Therein lies the difference.

This presumption that this ambivalent, contrary & utterly confusing mess of an umbrella has achieved unity is a fallacy & misleading. It was designed to be so. As it becomes very easy to defend something as vague & non-controversial as identifying as ‘asexual’, say, by ‘uniting’ those who have truly been oppressed with those whose “difference” illicits nothing greater than a shrug.

I know we disagree on these points anyway, Matthew, but I’d also like to point out that including Nettie Pollard in this might also be undermining your arguments for other, more nefarious reasons.
