I get unreasonably excited about Chicago, cybersecurity, education, and local impact.
assoc prof & director of undergrad studies @uiccs, board @pvchicago
Ross Anderson cared deeply about the human outcomes of security & policy. He did not focus his brilliance on amassing tech wealth but instead on the hardest challenges, using nuanced technical insights in fighting to protect the vulnerable.
What a terrible loss for us all. 🫂❤️🩹
@vj_chidambaram The cover letter lets you say why you’re applying _here_. Then you don’t need to customize each statement. On the recruitment side, it’s an amazing proxy for “how interested is the applicant in our school vs. any ranked school that will give them an offer.”
@nc2y@TMobile Wow really disappointing! I've been overall happy with @TMobile and make use of international roaming but it's always worrying to have capricious business decisions like these hanging over your head.
Has your department sent out interview invites for faculty candidates yet?
I know many great candidates who've gotten few-to-no bites, but a lot of places seem to be hiring. I'm wondering if it's a winner-take-all situation, or if we're collectively late this year (HCII is!)
We've started the process of putting together the Program Committee for ACM CCS 2024 @acm_ccs, and have opened the (self) nomination form.
I'm chairing the Web Security track.
If you or someone you know would be a good fit, please fill out the form: https://t.co/OfsBg4hCVH
@nzettelplanning It skips the distributor markup leading to much larger profit margin on the main moneymaker? My q: was there a tech breakthrough enabling profitable onsite brewing or was it just a wheels on suitcases moment?
@gianluca_string I encouraged my students to try it in upper division web dev+sec class, not sure how useful it has been. Leo Porter coauthored a textbook on using it in cs1: https://t.co/T4jxjk7cPJ
@JGrantGlover I would guess it’s a combination of tech (as mentioned downthread by @dlknowles) and the machine’s shift away from the patronage job structure to more labor/biz donation based such that it no longer needs geographic compactness/continuity to function.
@JGrantGlover This picture is of Cleveland-Cliffs (nee ArcelorMittal, nee Bethlehem Steel) at Burns Harbor, with Dune Acres in the background. Same point applies about preservation of the dunes.
Elegant summary: SMS for 2FA/acct recovery is "the perfect is the enemy of the good" until it isn't. One of the reasons we can't provide one size fits all "security best practices" recommendations to users.
Complicating matters, teaching regular users about SMS for 2FA is great, because flawed infrastructural approaches are much more likely to be successful than they are at password management.
And unfortunately, many companies deal with both mass market and high-value targets.
