Intention changes everything...
Why this task?
Why this scaffold?
Why this question?
Why this grouping?
Why this feedback?
If we can’t explain how a decision supports learning, we should probably reconsider the decision.
That’s designing learning.
Teaching sustainability isn’t extra—it’s essential. 🌍

We teach math and science by modeling; why do we punish when students don’t know positive behavior?
We must teach behaviors intentionally, modeling and practicing them just as we do academic skills.

Classroom management is about managing yourself and how you respond to students. After all, you can only control yourself. You can't control other people.

What really drives motivation? Self-Determination Theory points to three key psychological needs:
✔️ Competence – Feeling capable and effective.
✔️ Autonomy – Having control over your work and choices.
✔️ Relatedness – Feeling connected to others.
When these needs are met, we’re more motivated, productive, and happy.
High growth is better than high achievement.
Some students come to us already high achievers.
That's why our focus needs to be to grow all kids.
The low achieving & the high achieving.
Grow them all.

What's the goal of what we do in the classroom?
It's not to get the kids to know the stuff we're teaching.
It's to get the kids to take the learning inthe classroom & use it anywhere long after they've left us.
Learning is the job.
Design for it to happen.
New book in the drafting.

These seem to be where most of learning potential lies for our kids & we need to know how to design these to get the most out of their learning.
✅What will learners engage with to produce evidence of learning?
✅How can we design supports so that all learners can reach the learning?
✅How can we actionable feedback that works?
✅How do we make this a consistent cultural practice?
Engagement doesn't happen with a "fun" assignment.
The engagement we want for learning takes:
Curiosity
Trust
Feedback
Goals
Challenge
Belief
& Other intentional design qualities.
Engagement isn't about entertainment.
It's about so much more.
We can get frustrated with our learners at times when we aren't getting the lifting of learning out of them we expect.
Knowing how Cognitive Load works can help you design more effective learning.
Often the learning in the room is only as effective as our design for it.
Adults in schools,
If kids feel:
Safe to make mistakes
Known as a person
Like they belong...
They tend to act:
Motivated to learn
Engaged in the process
Eager to receive feedback.
Young kids typically don't like to learn from an old adult who they think doesn't like them.
