When they wash and drink water that has touched a centuries-old decomposed relic, it is called scientific and “faith.” But when Hindus practise and follow the profound, symbolic and spiritual traditions of the Rishis, we are branded primitive, barbaric or superstitious.

Why is one tradition called “advanced” while the other is dismissed as backward?

For centuries, the intellectual achievements and subtle sciences of Bharat have been judged through an Abrahamic lens that presumed the right to define what is “civilised.”

How long will this intellectual double standard—and the condescension towards India—continue?

It is time to question the lens, not blindly accept the label.

With due regards to Sonia Gandhi, her best chance of becoming prime minister was when Vajpayee lost the trust vote in 1999, but she blew it.
She famously told the press that she had the support of 272 MPs to form a government (with her supposedly as PM). Although the last part was not officially spelt out.
However, Sharad Pawar and Mulayam Singh Yadav (and possibly others) put the proverbial spoke in the wheel when they said they would not support her because she was Italian-born. It was a slight Sonia could not accept. She had lived in India as the bahu and then widow of the first family. But people she saw as allies had blocked her path to claiming the chair that her sycophants had led her to believe was hers by right.
The Constitution does not require a prime minister to be a "natural-born" citizen (born in India). Naturalized citizens who hold valid Indian citizenship are also eligible. So, legally, nothing could have stopped her if she decided to anoint herself as PM. But she backed off.
Nearly a decade earlier, at a press conference soon after Rajiv’s assassination, then Congress president Sitaram Kesri claimed Sonia was qualified to be PM simply because she had travelled everywhere with her husband before his death. A journalist asked why they should not then make Rajiv’s driver the PM because he also went everywhere with him. Kesri looked pained, but the exchange said more about her claimed qualifications than anything else.
And, yes, journalists then did ask such questions of politicians.
What followed was the story of Sonia Gandhi’s “political generosity” - that she gracefully refused to become prime minister after her husband’s death and instead poignantly shut the door on her political ambitions to take care of her traumatized children. That may have been true, but she was not above engaging in a little politics from behind the closed gates of 10 Janpath. She refused to support Sharad Pawar, who thought he had the qualifications to take over after Rajiv.
Like Modi today, Pawar had risen the political ladder and spent years as MLA before running the state and then becoming an MP. Whether he was the most qualified is debatable, because except for age being in his favour. Pranab Mukherjee and PV Narasimha Rao were eminently more qualified. Pawar was also adept at kicking away the proverbial ladder once he reached the top!
When Rao became PM there are enough reports about how she tried to undermine him through Arjun Singh and other Rajiv loyalists. Her treatment of Rao after he lost the election and after his death is now part of folklore.
Has anything changed for Sonia or her children? None of them has experience of running even a local body department, though Sonia effectively controlled Manmohan Singh’s government through the National Advisory Council. Yet their devoted supporters still want all of them in office, preferably together, with the next generation of the dynasty waiting in the wings.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Like nobody else has the right to rule the country.
A video still exists of Narendra Modi opposing Sonia as PM. He compared it to Nehru refusing to let Richard Holkar become ruler of the Holkar kingdom because his mother was a foreigner. If that same standards were applied today, neither Rahul nor Priyanka would ever become Prime Ministers!
