Here's where people are playing the semantics game. When a veteran hears deploy and support of oif or oef, they immediately recognize he deployed to a combat zone.

When a civilian hears it, they likely think the same thing, but also they think helping people go to war is the same thing as supporting oef/oif.

The reality: he was deployed to Italy to provide force protection for air bases, which is an honorable thing but it's not in support of Iraqi freedom or enduring freedom.

He's trying to connect himself to these operations because he knows the implication is he served in combat.
