The Newsmax article from yesterday covers a protest in Kingston where over 500 people rallied against Jamaica’s new deal with the US. The agreement lets Jamaica temporarily take up to 25 third-country nationals every two weeks, basically transit stops before they’re moved elsewhere. The government swears no criminals, they’ll only stay short-term, and the US covers costs.
Protesters are upset about the secrecy, the full deal terms aren’t public, no real consultation, and they’re worried about safety and straining resources, especially after last year’s hurricane. Opposition folks showed up too, saying the screening might let unsafe people in. The government’s pushing back, saying it’s tightly controlled. It’s a fresh story, still heating up

The current agreement is a memorandum of understanding where Jamaica accepts up to 25 third-country nationals every two weeks, so roughly 12 or 13 per week on average. They’re only supposed to be there temporarily as a transit stop before moving on to another country, and the US is supposed to cover the costs.
No criminals are allowed, Jamaica can reject anyone, and the total on the island at any one time shouldn’t exceed 25. The full deal details haven’t been made public, which is why people are protesting.
