We took @IonQ_Inc public on Friday! Leaving aside how you might feel about the NYSE's simulacra of religious ritual, this represents the culmination of years of hard, brilliant work by the scientists and engineers that I'm inspired by daily and honored to collaborate with. 1/2

Wild to me that Amazon's order confirmations intentionally hide the two most important things:
- What you ordered
- Where it's being shipped
Completely nuking their customer UX in order to keep Google from getting their commerce data.

1/ This @ProPublica investigation has it all: Money laundering allegations, Mennonite & evangelical Christians, Obamacare, CPAC, a family “conglomerate” that includes a pot farm, a private airline & a bank in the Ozarks.
Strap in as we magically whisk you away to… Canton, Ohio.
We need to talk more seriously about how we escaped ZIRP, unemployment is at a 50+ year low, real wages are now positive (and have been for the lower quintiles for some time), and the rich have taken a big hit to their wealth
So many people here dreamed of this scenario.
Here is how #platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. 1/
Hmmm. I just had a bizarre experience, involving a global news organisation and a trillion dollar corporation. (I got caught in the middle, so... owch.)
It’s not the sort of experience the people involved usually talk about in public… so I think I’ll talk about it in public.

The way the real world works is that if you build enough housing and affordable/supportive housing, more people will be housed.
This is how Atlanta was able to reduce homelessness by 40%, Houston by 63%, Finland by 75%, and Tokyo by 80%.
Probs obvious, but I think lack of cheap housing in cities is the main thing to blame for most culture getting worse (contemporary novels, indie movies, music, less weird art, etc.) — mostly, the only people who can afford to make a career in this stuff have inherited wealth now.
1/ There is every chance that this is just a typical series of layoffs anticipating the coming recession, which is typical in finance. But there is also a possibility this is the beginning of a long period of decline for the finance industry. 🧵

A wonderful and practical talk on minimal viable software architecture by @randyshoup at #yow22
I don't understand the logic here. Permitting reform is necessary to expedite decarbonization. The GOP is about to take the House, and is highly likely to take the Senate in 2024. When are you going to get a better deal? Can climate wait until 2028? https://t.co/7RjkuaU2Wb
Feedback effects: Google initially relied on the (human-curated) link structure of the internet to derive "importance" signals from the internet graph. As people started using Google instead of links, Google accidentally destroyed the fabric that provided the value.
My first blog post ever! Be harsh, but, you know, constructive.
