In 8 years of marriage and at least that many countries visited, it’s never been an issue that my husband and I kept our last names… until this week. Apparently the system at @foxrentcars will automatically trigger the daily fee to add a driver if the last name differs.
@HSBFest Bless the security procedures and staff. They set the tone. And the tone is “everybody be cool, and we’ll be fine.” Of many festivals and many years it’s far and away my favorite security situation.
One of the best things you can do as a job seeker is establish good rapport with your recruiter.
The better your rapport, the more they’ll be willing to go to bat for you to the hiring team in certain situations.
For example:
We’ve been working with this one SWE who we knew was actively interviewing with other companies, but a great fit for our role.
He was straightforward and transparent with what he was looking for in order to move forward with an offer & we communicated that w the manager.
He received another offer late yesterday & called to let me know.
He interviewed with our manager on Monday & we’re waiting for feedback. Said he would prefer our potential offer bc comp is better and easier commute (hybrid).
While he prefers our role, he also doesn’t want to wait too long to risk the other offer which is totally understandable.
So what are we going to do?
Calling the manager and pushing for the offer for him.
Fingers crossed.
@IanColdwater I've never met you, but I've learned a lot from and appreciate your tweets. I don't have a technical role but I work with a lot who do, and your insights help me understand that perspective.
Many performance management issues stem from unclear implicit expectations. I've advised on workplace bullies who tell me working well with their coworkers wasn't in the job description, so it not only wasn't a priority-- they literally did not think it mattered.
I agree, but I also often advocate for explicitly including "glue work," interpersonal skills, mentorship/learning as job and performance review expectations because that is the first step to valuing it in the workplace.
I'm writing an e-book about corporate job searching!
If you'd like to be a beta reader: send a DM w/ contact info - you'll get a free copy & be in the 1st readers' group-- I only ask for some feedback. Prefer people I don't know that well (or at all) for wider perspectives.
I remember in hs we kicked off elections for student body govt like the US party conventions. IIRC the states' delegates repped each homeroom. It was rowdy and I remember teachers being so disappointed in us for not taking it seriously. Nice to see the DNC is having serious fun!
Tim Walz missed the most important call of his life because he didn’t recognize the phone number.
Voicemail: “Hey, Tim, it’s Kamala. I really want to talk to you.”
Finally getting around to assembling a workbook based on my job search coaching lectures & exercises, but as I'm writing context between them I'm realizing it may end up more like a book book...
The former invites the sharer to shut down or double down. They may be more likely to emotionally react to being challenged instead of sharing more information.
The latter invites clarity, additional evidence, and discussion, which can stay centered on the information shared.
In most work and personal situations, it's both more diplomatic and kind to react to surprising (especially sensitive) information shared with you with curiosity rather than denial.
"No way! That can't possibly be true" vs.
"Interesting. What makes you say that?"
Not to mention this setup is inaccessible at best (hostile at worst) to people with disabilities and the elderly. Touch screens at standing height require assistance for those in wheelchairs, the font is too small, and there’s no one staffed at the front desk to help.
I think Quest Diagnostics is the most appropriate name for a service that requires endless hoops to go through. The robot kiosk can’t find my appt. Another man has waited 30 mins to drop off a sample. Another is here for an appt the computer thinks is 3 hrs from now.
I am 90% certain there are bugs in the software interpreting time incorrectly, because no one here has an appt at precisely the time they thought, but the staff here are so jaded and overworked they can’t think outside of “the computer says so”.
I thought “oh they sell Coors in a metal bottle, great” and then they won’t give you the cap. So I bought a bottle of wine (sold in a plastic carafe) just to have a suitable reusable container (technically they sell a metal water bottle at the merch store, but it was sold out).
Policy and intentions have a pretty big gap. Today’s ex: after getting burned elsewhere with a reusable metal water bottle we had to toss, we brought a plastic bottle to reuse at @BottleRockNapa. Only to be told it’s a “plastic-free” venue. They sell plastic cups everywhere 🤔
So yes, it’s a capitalism play (especially since I haven’t seen a single water bottle sold, only cans that are hard to refill) disguised as an environmental one. Even security was like 🤷🏻♀️ sorry. But don’t claim you’re “going green” if you sell all kinds of plastic.
