๐คฏ๐ฅ OMG! I HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO BITCOIN CORE!!! ๐ฅ
Up until about a month ago I did NOT think this would ever be possible. Bitcoin Core's world-class C++ is just FAR beyond my skills.
But a whole team of amazing people & chance encounters led me here.

I'm seeing an uptick in scared posts about Ledger screens dying.
The screens CAN be fairly easily replaced. No soldering or other electronics wizardry required.
But note that your bitcoin is NOT "in" the device. The device means NOTHING; your mnemonic backup is what matters.
PSA: don't rely on ANY hardware wallet to be your sole long-term storage.
Someone once told me their plan was to bury a hww and not touch it for 20 yrs. You CANNOT assume that hardware will keep functioning.
Long term backup = mnemonic seed phrase. Period.
@design_sats Really? SeedSigner just by its very nature kind of makes it clear just how little the actual device matters.
I tend to have my dev device(s) plugged in 24/7. I've never had a screen wear out. They ARE easy to break if you push directly on the glass, though.

@joshman@CryptoCloaks I don't know how usage or LACK of usage affects these OLED screens' aging/failure rates, but I wouldn't assume that the backup that is just as old as the "live" one will be in any better shape.
@tomasi1303 What's the phrase, "eternal September"?
Will always have an influx of people new to self-custody. And plenty who did it but never understood what they were doing.
@matijaoe I don't know if they tend to degrade gracefully or all of a sudden or either and it just depends.
But all of these screens WILL fail. Blind guess is that anything over ~5yrs is on borrowed time.
But really, the only reason to salvage it is to save money vs buying something new and expensive.
For the nth time: the device does not matter.

@CopernicusSon6 A given seed might happen to live in a particular device. But you can load that same seed into any other device via your mnemonic.
Realizing the device itself IS NOT YOUR SEED is a huge mental shift that clears up so many concerns over hardware that WILL inevitably fail.
The good news is that each individual replacement screen is super cheap.
So if you do need to do a replacement, just order plenty of extras to allow for screwups. I had ordered 5.
@sesi_the_man Modded the script a bit. So now it's 3 prints. First two plates are 3hrs 40min each.
Third plate is 3hrs 8min.
Still a long time, but total print time would be 10.5 hrs.
