The Alcoholic Beverages Association argues that repeal of Sec14 of the Excise Duty Act will lead to collapse of local Spirits production in the country.
The chart below is quite busy but the take homes is this - local spirits production will come under strain because of 2 things:
· The proposal to shift excise to be based on alcoholic content (in the illustration given, it bumps up excise from Kes 89 to Kes 160)
· The proposal to repeal Sec14 of the Excise Duty Act which hits the Cost of Goods Sold increasing it 3.4x

It is commendable that the East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has lowered its carbon emissions by 55% in the last year by investing in clean energy sources that included biomass steam plants in its Ugandan and Kenyan operations.
